Here's a rare medical drama where the medicine is the drama.

I misjudged the show's politics: the series is much grimmer than I'd [previously] understood, less preachy and more legitimately nihilistic about the circumstances surrounding scientific and social progress.

Beautifully filmed in New York City, The Knick captures a distant era with remarkable fidelity, as if the filmmakers had transported themselves back in time and then let the cameras roll.

Death is everywhere in the world of The Knick. And yet it feels like one of the most alive new programs of 2014.
August 11, 2014
A program that could have been stuck on one culture shifts, offering a broader look at race, class, gender, science and society in ways that turn storytellers into kids surveying a particularly large candy store.

Despite first impressions that can feel one-note, all the characters turn out to be complicated and intriguing. And we become slowly addicted by the jittery uncertainty of The Knick.
April 6, 2019
The Knick quickly becomes something of an outré procedural drama that remembers that well-paced storytelling is best served by consistently raw intensity.

Stylish, dark, gory and twisted, Cinemax's The Knick is exactly the show you've been waiting for, if you're the type of person who thinks Downton Abbey needs more viscera.

...Soderbergh and the production designers recreate turn of the century street scenes in painstaking detail. And perhaps that's the biggest thrill in watching The Knick: It's like travelling backward in time and landing in the middle of Central Park

The product - through Soderbergh's eye - is a sight to behold.

Luckily, the background interiors of this drama, set in 1901, are stunning, making this drama appointment viewing for Antiques Roadshow fans.

Directed by Steven Soderbergh,The Knick is a beautifully drawn period drama.

[Soderbergh's] signature cool and detached style is thankfully still there in every take. Only Soderbergh could make a show set in the 1900s look so modern.

It feels gross when shows like The Knick... ask us to sympathize with characters who engage in behaviors that hurt a hell of a lot of people outside the world of fiction.
August 12, 2015
"The Knick" is probably the finest show ever produced for Cinemax and more typical of the programming you find on sister network, HBO.

Historical medical drama is violent, graphic, and complex.

The series is driven by the performances of its leads, particularly Owen who carries the genius of Dr. Thackery with a brilliant mixture of narcissism and humanity while co-star Holland's portrayal of Dr. Edwards holds a quiet respect.
October 20, 2014
Directed by Steven Soderbergh, it looked amazing - all crisp period detail and gallons of dark arterial blood. But if it was bracingly fresh in appearance, it was all too hackneyed in set-up.
October 17, 2014
Most of the time the series relishes in the same kind of perverse, alarming pleasure that looking through vintage medical books gives one.
October 17, 2014
All 10 episodes of the series have been directed by Steven Soderbergh and his Oscar-winning eye tells in a detailed, but never finicky, evocation of the past.
August 8, 2014
It's not the future of TV, but it makes you feel pretty good about its present.

For a period piece, it's strikingly contemporary - and quite gory, although the surgery scenes never feel gratuitous.

This reviewer watched seven hourlong episodes in 24 hours, finding it as addictive as Dr. Thackery (Clive Owen) does his morning injections.
August 8, 2014
Still, aided by that blood and a driving, anachronistic techno-beat score, The Knick avoids the worst trap of a period piece: It isn't quaint. It's also never dull.
