Episode Info

When Artie (Rip Torn) has an emergency appendectomy, Larry (Garry Shandling) gets an old friend, Jonathan (Ian Buchanan of Twin Peaks), to fill in as producer. Artie, watching from home, is unhappy that Larry introduces Jonathan on the air, and lets a comic, Jeff Cesario, "panel" on the show. Meanwhile, Larry meets Sam Fitzgerald (Bill Applebaum), the new network exec in charge of late-night programming. Sam likes Jonathan's ideas for the show, which Jonathan has written up in a lengthy memo. Phil (Wallace Langham) soon gets ahold of it, and passes out copies to everyone on the show. They all start to think their jobs are in danger. "Fear is a great motivator," Jonathan assures Larry. Larry has to reassure an insecure Hank (Jeffrey Tambor) that he doesn't need a more youthful sidekick, as suggested in the memo, but Hank has already gone and gotten himself an earring. Soon Artie gets his own copy of the memo, and shows up at the office in a bad mood, high on Demerol and tequila.
