Although the issues raised by The Last Tycoon ... are dealt with unsatisfactorily ... it is possible that Bezos, Price and company were made uncomfortable by the thought of these questions being placed before a wide audience.

The Last Tycoon has all the glamorous trappings of old Hollywood: Amazon clearly threw lots of money at the screen, with sumptuous costumes by Mad Men designer Janie Bryant. But the joy is missing.

The series acutely feels like an idea that would have made for a good movie, instead of being stretched to a breaking point to make it work for TV.

A diverting series that uses history the way revelers at a Gatsby-themed party today use a strand of fake pearls... It's a missed opportunity. One that, after a gorgeous 10 hours, you may not remember.

While the period details are exquisite throughout "The Last Tycoon," the conflict doesn't jump off the screen quite like the costumes.

Part of the problem is that [Matt] Bomer's performance doesn't suggest the emotional or artistic depths of Monroe. In a role that calls for a Don Draper, he is too often like a less-pouty Pete Campbell.

The Last Tycoon is a 1930s Hollywood drama based on the last, unfinished novel by F Scott Fitzgerald. This script should have stayed in the drawer, too.

There's a lot of pedigree here, but none of it jumps off the screen.

Strong pilot, strong finale but in-between? Hours and hours of luscious mediocrity.

The Last Tycoon feels more like an exercise in getting a style from the past down pat and less like a modern TV series that you'd want to watch. That's not just a stumbling block -- it's a wall.

The flaw in this visual and stylistic gem, however, is that the plot beneath all this polish does not contain much in the way of human significance or honesty for a viewer to grab onto.

The Last Tycoon is a bit silly when it's trying to be dramatic, and some of the lines are jarring when they're trying to be profound.

While it has the look down, the story needed a lot more fine-tuning. This season is simply too scatter-brained in focus and not very successful in molding its cast of characters into compelling, fully realized individuals.

The Last Tycoon is in the vein of Hollywood's current trend of turning the cameras on itself... this latest effort is just glossy and showy, like the unreality of Hollywood itself, lacking much of a heart or soul. Worse than that, it's predictable.

Admirable care went into the costumes and settings; the script, not so much. There is quite a bit of awkward, didactic dialogue here. Nuance, apparently, had not yet been invented in the 1930s.

While most of the time, it seems to be aiming for semi-historically accurate realism, it's also steeped in enough fantasy to make it hard to know how to engage with it, or even whether to trust it.

The consistently ineffective mix of real and fictional characters highlights how poorly the series captures such a fascinating world.

Lights. Cameras. Cue the cliches.

The show he (Ray) has made from that material is another slow burn not working hard enough to justify its existence or your future viewing, under the assumption that once you start any streaming show, you'll just keep going.
July 25, 2017
Period Hollywood drama is all style, not much fun.
