The Magicians: Season 1 Reviews

January 26, 2016
The Magicians provided enough evidence that it has enough talent and ambition to keep the surprises coming.

As with a lot of properties premiering new worlds, it's balanced unevenly between world building and story building.

With so many characters, and such an abundance of twists and turns and truths and lies, keeping up is exhausting even in the first two hours. And none of the characters, especially the mopey Quentin, is engaging enough to make it worth the effort.

Harry Potter meets Gossip Girl in The Magicians, Syfy's new adaptation of a Lev Grossman trilogy, and it's a good match.
January 25, 2016
The result ends up feeling like a knock-off of the genre works that inspired Grossman, lacking in the wry commentary that made the original books feel so fresh.

In terms of establishing a world and getting the plot going, the show's first episodes are actually pretty promising.

It'll take more than an episode or two to see what The Magicians becomes when it stops trying so hard to be the dark, sexy, thoughtful, sexy, and also sexy series it so clearly wants to be. There's a lot to like here, and plenty of potential.

The show is different enough in its details that from moment to moment you can forget how derivative it is.

The book's fans may not be completely satisfied - dialogue often doesn't do justice to Grossman's withering prose - but the spirit of this dark-natured series is intact.

Even as a genre fan, The Magicians compels me less for its supernatural side than its feel for the social alienation that makes fantasy so appealing in the first place.

An over-reliance on mechanically contrived incident hinders the show's ability to create the kind of emotional intensity and intelligently wrought suspense that were the hallmarks of the novels.

The show's special effects are deftly executed and the script is nicely crafted with twists, turns and surprises to hold our attention. You could almost say it's magic.

Magicians is just the latest attempt to conjure up something special. The new series is about a magical school for wizards, but it's not Harry Potter's Hogwarts. Not even close.
December 21, 2015
The television show, anxious and impatient, rushes through the bullet points of the book's plot and forgoes the emotional complexity that made the books more unique than just the Potter imitation they seem at first blush.

The Magicians isn't a nasty scold of Young Adult geekery, but it is a fantasy that gets you reflecting on your relationship to fantasy, a looking-glass fiction held up to a world cluttered with looking-glass fictions.

There are problems with Syfy's pilot of The Magicians... But the essential truth of the story-about Quentin's battle with the worst parts of himself-is largely intact.
December 17, 2015
It would take a clairvoyant to know whether The Magicians will eventually develop into an agreeably dark and twisty piece of juicy genre fare, but at this early stage its future looks murky.
