It's the late 1950s and Miriam "Midge" Maisel has everything she has ever wanted -- the perfect husband, two kids and an elegant apartment on New York's Upper West Side. Her seemingly idyllic life takes a surprising turn when she discovers a hidden talent she didn't previously know she had -- stand-up comedy. This revelation changes her life forever as she begins a journey that takes her from her comfortable life on the Upper West Side through the cafes and nightclubs of Greenwich Village as she makes her way through the city's comedy industry on a path that could ultimately lead her to a spot on the "Tonight Show" couch. The series was created by Amy Sherman-Palladino ("Gilmore Girls").

What to Know

Critics Consensus

All good comedy sets must arrive at a final punchline, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel reliably nails its own with a fifth season that wisely puts Rachel Brosnahan and Alex Borstein's repartee front and center.

In addition to Ms. Brosnahan’s Audrey Hepburn-meets-screwball creation, the show has been blessed with supporting actors who have lost nothing over the life of the series. Go to Full Review

Sherman-Palladino and her staff still churn out more witty dialogue per minute than anyone other than Tina Fey. And the show continues to look wonderful. Go to Full Review

The final season, like its central character, is a little scatterbrained but compensates with charm, chutzpah and an ability to spin emotional truths into comic gold. Go to Full Review

It's not easy to give a successful conclusion to a production of this style, but they found a way to leave us satisfied with the fate of the characters, giving a good ending to the different stories, making us laugh and moved. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

A showstopper, with the same snappy and smart dialogue, transformative production and costume design, and lovable characters that made many fall in love with the show in the first place. Go to Full Review

The flash-forwards … might have been a tad sentimental, but boy, did Mrs. Maisel know how to land the plane in the present. What an utterly boisterous finale, fitting for a show whose heart could never beat less than 200 times a minute. Go to Full Review

See more Barry L @BarryLynn 08/26/2024 I haven't really found too many series to watch on Amazon, but this one is spectacular. It's in a league of its own. Rachel B. is amazing as Midge Maisel and the other actors/actresses are not far behind. For a trip (for some) through memory lane and a real depiction (but humorous) of life in the (Jewish and entertainment past) watch this series. See more timmy b 03/04/2024 Season 5 paled in comparison to the previous 4. It was rushed, pretentious, not in sync with the spirit of the previous seasons, many empty characters & filler dialogue & story. The substance of it all felt like it was catering to pop culture & critics rather than setting standards like it did before. Did I mention it was rushed? The totality of the season simply seemed empty. Though the Acting, Cinematography, Set design, Wardrobe & Direction was still incredible. But what a disappointing end to an otherwise Marvellous Series. See more Porter 01/09/2024 Most well done season since S1 👏🏼 What a beautiful ending and spectacular storyline. The writers wrapped up the series in such a meaningful way and really did it justice. See more Arya S @AnyaS 10/06/2023 If you loved the first 4 season of Mrs. Maisel, keep your memories and skip this last season and just watch the last half hour. Season 5 writers ruin the series by reducing all the characters, even the wonderful costumes, to caricatures. Beloved Midge has become an unsympathetic, self- centered whiner ( Sherman-Palladino made the same mistake with Gilmore Girls.) The parents (way too much of them) have become caricature Jews, constantly kvetching ad nauseum -- it's a wonder Jewish focus groups have not objected to such stereotyping. The story jumps back and forth between a number of plot lines and timelines, as if the writers weren't sure hot to get to the very satisfying ending. Some great musical numbers and set pieces thrown in along the way. See more Ivan M 09/27/2023 What to say about a show that has been on for the past five years and you've been meaning to watch it since year one, but didn't until its final year, year five? Well, you say, WHAT A FOOL I'VE BEEN! I should be incarcerated for sleeping on a magnificent show. I can see now why Rachel Brosnahan won the role of Lois Lane in Superman: Legacy. Let's hope James Gunn does her right, because after The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel–WHEEEWWWWWW!!! GIVE EVERYONE THE AWARDS!! I cannot believe that I slept on this show for its entire run. That's a "Shame on me" right there. "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" is a different kind of show. It's feminine, it's masculine, it's masterfully written; it's inspiring. The journey that Midge Weissman-Maisel went through over the course of her five year TV run is one that pretty much anyone with a dream. I hadn't realized what an amazing person someone who speaks their mind can be. In my experience, which is one shared by Midge, is that if you speak your mind then everyone will eventually leave or, at the very least, not like to talk to you. Yet, Midge learns over the course of her series that confidence doesn't look like aggression, rather it looks like living yourself enough to understand your worth ALL of the trouble you will go through to achieve the very thing you want. "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" is smart, it's cleverly funny, and it's unapologetically blunt—all factors that make a SUPERB sitcom. Plus, this is a period piece about a woman whose husband leaves her and she then accidentally becomes a stand-up comedian IN THE LATE 1950s!! This is MY kind of show! Especially because during college, all of my auditions for plays have been me standing up on stage and ranting about my day or something relatable; the very thing Midge Maisel is known for, her stream of consciousness speaking. By the time you get to the fifth & final season, you realize what the show's intent was the entire time. The fifth season, I would say, is some of the best TV storytelling I have seen in a long time. I forgot Season Five debuted this past summer of 2023—mind blowing. In the end, this show is special. I didn't realize how much I would find myself relating with Midge and her situations almost EXACTLY. The final scene is one that satisfied me and I would regard as one of the most satisfying finales of TV history. I give The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel a 10. See more Read all reviews
