What to Know

Critics Consensus

This adaptation of John Wyndham's classic novel is often cuckoo in an off-putting way and overstays its welcome with a bloated runtime, but it holds some diabolical delights for viewers who enjoy a science-fiction nightmare.

Series creator David Farr (The Night Manager) and his roster of directors do the creepy stuff well, although seven episodes does feel a bit long for the story. Go to Full Review

The main issue is that there doesn’t seem to be much underpinning the eeriness. It’s only if you squint that you might be able to see some more substantial comments about the horrors of suburbia, or the sacrifices and strictures of motherhood. Go to Full Review

Suffice to say, after a mid-series slump, the show blossoms into a captivating conspiracy thriller with an enjoyably explosive finale. Arise, Creepy Keeley, queen of cuckooland. Go to Full Review

It’s another series that probably could have been a two-hour movie, but it’s an interesting juncture for this story to come back around. The seven episodes give us time to examine its cultural relevance. Go to Full Review

Those who like horror when it's subtly creepy rather than grotesque and savage may find this catnip. Go to Full Review

Edward L @Glyndower Jan 23 Another updated adaptation made ridiculous by woke casting. Supposedly set in an English country village there are more 'persons of colour' than in Brixton. That said the series, while overlong, generally serves the source material well, although some of the casting is rather obvious, Keeley Hawes gives her usual worried-looking performance and her relationship with her mentally ill daughter is somewhat annoying, Max Beesley is as usual at a loss to understand what is happening around him and Samuel West turns up to do his pompous official act. The old black and white film version was better. See more Ben W @BendyToy Jan 13 I find it odd that a British show has to be Americanized - the language, the script, even the dates (July 6th instead of 6th July)... But yes, surprisingly long for a short novel and a soundtrack you have to keep turned down to be sufferable. See more Andrei D Oct 15 The weirdness of the kids varies too much and the actors needs to swing wildly in their interactions, also kind of drops the ending See more Clare H Sep 6 I enjoyed the premise of this as I hadn't heard of the book. The acting was good and it kept me watching and enjoying until the last half an hour of the last episode. We are expected to believe that all the equipment was there to build an explosive. Nothing happened to the guy that engineered the whole thing in the first place. And we didn't find out what happened to Nathan, as his mom didn't know him. It felt like the writers decided they needed to get away early and stopped writing anything. See more R J 01/04/2025 I wish I read more reviews before watching as the series was the perfect combination of mid with a short length that allowed me to waste entirely wayyy too long watching before realizing the slow dull series was never picking up. - I finally bailed in the 3rd to last episode I skimmed through to the end only to still get more aggrivated with the writing selection when things FINALLY pick up. The writers eventually unveal the truth about the children. Oddly the adults are not on board, yet not FULLY against them because why... the writing is TRASH! The series progressively worsens as the children start killing people incl. a parent, + turning 1 human sibling into a mental vegatable. Then, that childs father decides to kill these ALIENS in childrens bodies, until the adults moronically defend the aliens who clearly are unlovable sociopaths. -This made the series completely unbelievable & unrealistic after the writers made all the parents who were normal rational sane people to start the series- now become obsessive pathetic loons who DESIRE the love of obvious aliens.
