What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Mosquito Coast has suspense to spare, but by burying the best parts of its source material in too many twists it fails to turn into a satisfying series.

The sheer propulsive pace of the drama has it surging forward, always. It is the proverbial white-knuckle ride, a gush of narrow escapes followed by yet more dangerous situations. Go to Full Review

When it comes to an adrenaline rush, the TV series is the hands-down winner. Go to Full Review

"The Mosquito Coast" works best when you just follow along with the running and don't think too hard about the rest, but the running itself becomes tedious after awhile. Not everything makes perfect sense, or seems remotely plausible. Go to Full Review

While it's packed with enough twists and turns to regularly nudge you to the edge of your seat, The Mosquito Coast frequently strains the boundaries of believability too far in an effort to sustain its secrets and mysteries. Go to Full Review

Allie is enjoyable to watch, even as he puts his family through an endless series of challenging scenarios. Go to Full Review

-The pilot episode is extremely focused with its set up of a family on the run. It has that edge of your seat stressful ride that carries on with each episode. There are cliffhangers and tension with every episode. Go to Full Review

Harry S @RT19865103 09/08/2024 This series has nothing in common with the movie. It is a lengthy rambling series that has no center and keeps shifting from overdone story plot to the next. This "family on the run" plot has been done in several series like the Americans , or Ozark. But those series actually made some sense, and didn't have plot holes miles wide. The lengthy introduction over 4 episodes, of the characters and to the family members and their situations is so ridiculous that your belief in some kind of realism goes out the window. For instance they are crossing the Mexican desert to pick up a cell phone signal because Justin Theroux's character just happens to be this genius who can turn a power antenna into a cellphone attachment! I kept watching and it got no better. Unreal and hard to believe situations, for instance , ending up in some expatriate colony in the Mexican jungle, only to find this so called jungle village is just down the river from a city with rock n roll bar filled with gangsters? FBI agents going down into Mexico to find the fugitive family with no back up? The whole thing is just so poorly written and illogical. A waste of watching time. Re watch the Americans again. See more Daddy M @daddymooch 06/18/2024 The writers in this are trash. These puerile strike to get paid more but they make garbage. The kids in this show make it unwatchable. Don't watch this show See more Chris T @RT00516332 04/30/2024 Having loved the book, I was disappointed when I watched the movie adaptation with Harrison Ford, many years ago. I had high hopes for this one, since the author was involved and his nephew plays the leading role. But I was misled. He did it for the money. The show has little to nothing to do with the book. If you watch it without having read the book, you might enjoy parts of it. I couldn't See more Jeffrey C @RT63520602 01/15/2024 I give it one only because it inspired me to rewatch the 90s movie again that I mostly forgot and then read more about the depth of the story and philosophies behind it. This series is just some typical retread of the story in chewing gum for the brain fashion, dragging it out in slow moving episodes with thoughtless deaths in the families path. This distracts from the original themes in the book/movie and makes it silly. Adding to it the mystery made up of running away from the cops for some unknown reason, which has nothing to do with the original story. I shut it off by the beginning of th esecond episode. See more Melanie L @RT81754510 04/22/2023 Every episode of this series has gripped me. I have found it to be excellent - both the acting and the story line. See more Bryan D @bdemain 04/03/2023 They tried really hard to convey a good intentioned political message, but it just got goofy. The characters' plots are nearly inconceivable and the extremes of storyline are wild. See more Read all reviews
