The Muppets, for its part, has more mainstream goals. It wants to be adult, but in a gentle, fun way that doesn't involve putting you off your food and making you despair of humanity.

Sadly The Muppets was neither sensational, inspirational nor celebrational.

With the exception of Gonzo, the Muppets should not work blue.

And when it comes to classics like The Muppets, the right course is to protect what's best about the gifts left us by creators universally described as gentle, kind and sweet - not to taint them by plundering their charm.

The Muppets isn't really the Muppets, except in sad facsimile.

This version of a Muppet show is a tone-deaf disaster.

With its human cameos, it's watchable, but never really funny.

Although The Muppets shares the backstage focus of the old Muppet Show, it lacks the spunkiness and innocence.

Alas, The Muppets arrives with two flaws: rather less funny, and with too much Miss Piggy.

And even if you prefer the good old days, there's nothing you're missing from skipping this latest entry, the most monotonous Muppet caper of all.

But one major concern keeps bubbling up: The original series had a lovingly dusty vaudevillian style, an affectionate throwback to a show business world from decades earlier, while this just feels like stuff from five years ago.

I did not laugh at The Muppets. Bill Prady tries to update Kermit and Company with adult humor. Miss Piggy and Kermit have called it quits, draining the Muppets of the warmth and love that made them so lovely in the first place.

This reinvention just feels a little overthought. The Muppets does not need to be snarky to be smart, and there's nothing antiquated about joy.

Potential is a little Fozzie.

Even if the mockumentary format was working -- and who knows, it might seem like a better fit later in the season -- the conception of the core characters leaves a lot to be desired.

Remember those frogs you used to dissect in school? This re-boot reeks of the same formaldehyde.

What matters, for the moment, is that the show is relying too heavily on our built-in affection for those characters and expecting us to do too much of the heavy lifting.

The two episodes of The Muppets I saw were rife with limp double entendres and the sort of winky-winky celebrity stroking that gives hard-working celebrity strokers a bad name.
September 18, 2015
I'm not reluctant to show this to my kids because of some of the double-entendres, but because I don't want them to see a version of the Muppets that, for now, is so utterly lacking in joy.

The Muppets never have lacked for emotional nuance, but in exploring the reality of their lives, a demystifying occurs that isn't always for the best when it comes to the Muppet legacy in your mind.
