Mikey's TV Review: The Muppets Mayhem (2023)
It's tricky to know who Disney are aiming for with their latest Muppet show. On the one hand it follows the tried and tested House of Mouse story template of friendship and family and doing the right thing, with a squeaky clean look and by casting a refreshing Indian/Hawaiian central duo. Lilly Sing and Tahj Mowry are perfect. On the other hand apart from a few newer artists (Lil Nas X, Zedd and Sofia Carson), the show is filled with older/cult artists and celebrities. I suspect the ‘main' target audience is ‘family', but it's mostly hitting targets Gen X/Boomers will recognise. Does anyone under 30 really know or remember the likes of Paula Abdul, Rachel Bloom, Cheech & Chong, Billy Corgan, Morgan Freeman, Susanna Hoffs, Peter Jackson, Tommy Lee, Ziggy Marley, Kevin Smith, Chris Stapleton, Danny Trejo and "Weird Al" Yankovic…? A point driven home by the fact they mention everyones name when they appear on screen!
The humour too aims broader and older than one might expect, but also filled with Easter eggs aplenty for anyone with more than a passing knowledge of music (especially 70's Rock), Kevin Smith and Peter Jackson movies, Spinal Tap and, and, and. For anyone of a certain age who can recall the joys of the original 70's series The Muppet Show there is all the nostalgia you could need, apart from perhaps a cameo or two more from beloved characters such as Fozzy, Piggy or Kermit. Although that might have perhaps pulled attention away from the band themselves. Each character fully formed and alive.
None of this would work of course without the outstanding puppeteers and incredible voice work of artists such as Bill Barretta, Dave Goelz, David Rudman. The greatest strength of the Muppets has always been their believability. They always feel real and despite their appearance, very human.
The cover song choices are great (All You Need Is Love, Join Together, True Colors, God Only Knows, Bridge Over Troubled Water…) but the original songs (written by Linda ‘Pink, 4 Non-Blondes' Perry), lack something essential - memorability. Sadly there's nothing here anywhere in the same league as Bret McKenzie's (Flight of the Conchords) contributions for 2011's The Muppets, such as Academy Award winning ‘Man or Muppet'. Mayhem is a fine effort, filled with laugh out loud moments and plenty of heart. It's also a promising sign that Jim Henson's furry felt creations still have a future and a relevance 50+ years after their creation.
