The series was shot in Prague, and it should be gorgeous to look at, but instead, it's oddly gray and murky. The plot, involving truth, justice and the creation of modern France, is equally murky.

What gives this new and notably updated British version of the classic tale its best kick, though, is the characterization of the four swashbucklers at the heart of it.

Old-fashioned it may be in spirit, but this adventure tale is nothing if not exciting.

The first episode is a bit overstuffed and murky, but "The Musketeers" gets better as it goes along, with charismatic performances and lively adventures.

It just doesn't have enough weight to captivate a modern audience that is perhaps more cynical and certainly more aware of storytelling tricks than any before it.

The fights were good, the women were comely and the production values high.

As the scheming Cardinal, who hates the Musketeers for no particular reason, [Peter] Capaldi does his best to inject some gravitas, but the script is pretty thin stuff.

It's a hoot but also a bit hortatory.

The main problem with The Musketeers, apart from the quality of the script, the acting and the predictability of the plot, was that there are only so many ways to make sword fights between men wearing blue leather tunics that entertaining or exciting.

Without a strong kinetic bond between these men, The Musketeers wouldn't work. Thankfully, for all of our sakes, Adrian Hodges has the foundation for what could be a compelling story for a 10-episode season.

It's a pleaser, but a basic one. It's not quite color-by-numbers but it's also not challenging. It's good ol' summertime escapism for those looking for some musket fire and swashbuckling.

This bunch [of characters] fall short. They're enthusiastic enough, but lack the necessary rakish charm to make cheating at cards, provoking duels and patronising women look like a proper job -- never mind a noble one.

It's fun, it's tongue-in-cheek, it's cosy - the perfect show to watch on a chilly Sunday evening with a mug of hot tea.

Cleavage, firearms, swordplay, leather jerkins, grubby hostelries, chickens flapping around in streets - and more cleavage... Well, you need a plot for one thing, in which... The Musketeers (BBC One) wasn't at all bad.

This swashbuckling romp will appeal to teenagers dreaming of adventure -- and forty-something TV critics too

Overall the series has given us enough thrills and excitement that getting to the end has been an enjoyable and at times fun journey rather than a chore.

There are some fun sword fights and scuffles featuring attractive, bearded men with occasional humor thrown in but, everything feels a bit stale and safe. There's nothing fresh here that makes the case for returning to this well-known story again.

While the sword-fighting is not exactly imaginatively staged, it is violently convincing, and so is the The Musketeers. With solid production values, it has set itself up to tell an old tale in a fun, entertaining way.

Even viewers who are just now meeting [Dumas'] iconic foursome will have some difficulties with this uneven BBC adaptation that begins with an overly complicated backstory and fails to fully make up for it with compelling characters and must-see action.

Refreshingly realistic in some ways (there is much jumping out of high windows, but the jumper is often actually injured) and soothingly romantic in others, The Musketeers is a captivating balance of spectacle and story
