Critics Consensus

The New Normal is heartfelt and briskly paced, but it suffers from one-dimensional characters and jarring tonal shifts.

Critic Reviews for The New Normal Season 1

There's enough good in the first episode to make me hope the show can grow into a comedy half as strong as the show that clearly inspired it, "Modern Family."

It's also fast and funny. As long as Ryan continues to mix humor from the cute and the curdled sides of the aisle, this show will entertain.

The New Normal wants what Modern Family is having. But if we're going to catapult from South Park to a Hallmark movie, we need a smoother ride.

Sep 10, 2012 | Rating: 2/5 | Full Review…

The New Normal is cheap and hectoring, to the point where random dwarves, deaf people and politically correct totems turn to the camera to lecture the viewers that "abnormal is the new normal."

Barkin makes nastiness a lot of fun.

As a pilot, it's a very mixed bag of dull character tropes, rushed emotional moments, and insensitive portrayals that ultimately rob it of its charm and positive vibes.

The most shocking new show on television this season is The New Normal. It's shocking because it's so boring

The show has a lot of promise and if it can continue to balance the adult humor and family comedy elements, this could be the breakout show of the fall.

The accurately cast, well-defined ensemble fits its characters to a T and delivers the razor-sharp dialogue with natural flair.

[It's like] an overexcited puppy that, one hopes, will grow up into a delightful, well-trained dog.

Trust us, The New Normal will be your must-watch family show of the week, and the fact that it's technically about a "nontraditional" family is what makes it perfect.

Audience Reviews for The New Normal: Season 1

  • Jul 07, 2018
clearly inspired by Modern family, it's a bit too soft and the jokes never really land... a shame because it had great potential! you should still watch it, preferably when modern family is on their break.
  • Jun 28, 2015
The New Normal wants to be Modern Family, except Modern Family is much better written.
  • Feb 16, 2014
Despite it's good intentions, especially with it breaking ground in introducing gay characters, it never really ended up being the show that I wanted to see but rather ended up being the one that I'd sit through because nothing better was on. It wasn't horrible by any means, but I was never grabbed.
