Tv Season Info

Jonathan Pine (Tom Hiddleston), a former British soldier turned night manager in a luxury hotel in Cairo, ends up in possession of confidential documents about illegal weapon trades, and turns them into the International Enforcement Agency in London. A few years later, while working in Switzerland, he is recruited by Angela Burr (Olivia Colman), an intelligence officer who's investigating Richard Onslow Roper (Hugh Laurie), a corrupt businessman with ties to the secret arms trade. While trying to infiltrate Roper's organization, Pine has to deal with his attraction for Roper's girlfriend Jed (Elizabeth Debicki), his constant disagreement with Roper's associate Corkoran (Tom Hollander), and the fact that the whole operation is being kept secret from parts of the intelligence agency for fear of being shut down. The spy drama is based on the novel of the same name by John le Carré.

Jonathan Pine doesn't shoot bad guys, and the one fistfight he gets into with multiple people, he loses badly. Instead, Pine is the most charming, intelligent, seductive spy on television.

What remains is the heart of the matter: A cat-and-mouse game in which the "The Pounce" moves in slow motion - and in both directions.

The real le Carré unreels here, with savvy updates (re-gendering the book's male spy boss) strengthening his nail-biting storytelling and ever keen focus on the toxic bureaucracy behind even the most opulent intrigue.

The Night Manager stands tall as a stand-alone gem that elevates the cat-and-mouse game without ever entrapping itself. Bravo. Pip pip. All that stuff.

In AMC's thoroughly enjoyable miniseries The Night Manager, Laurie, with a healthy tan and clear blue eyes, is perfectly beguiling and chilling as a billionaire arms dealer selling everything from guns to napalm during the Arab spring.

The production and performances really do deserve such adulation, but the miniseries itself feels like a rather by-the-book spy story - which, notably, it is; an acknowledgment that means even more when you consider the author of said book is [Carre].

This is a GORGEOUS television series, with jet-setting locales and a series of extremely well-fitted suits for Hiddleston.

The Night Manager is so respectful of its chosen genre as to occasionally verge on parody.

The Night Manager is almost doggedly devoted to showing its steps, but that just makes the payoff feel earned.

My favorite 1 season tv show I have ever watched. Excellently acted and directed with a compelling story throughout.

I normally do not do five star reviews, but as a long time Le Carre fan, I'd have to say that The Night Manager is one of the few Le Carre adaptations to truly hit the mark while also providing an entertaining experience. Incredible performances by Tom Hiddleston, Olivia Coleman, Hugh Laurie, and the rest of this powerhouse cast is just icing on the cake. So join young Jonathan Pine as he works with pregnant but wise and driven British intelligence officer Angela Burr to bring down the ruthless and cunning Richard "Dickie" Roper and his equally ruthless and loyal team of international arms dealers. You will NOT regret it.

People are being unfair to Hiddleston. I think he was fantastic in this. Coleman and Laurie were also a delight to watch. It's generic and formulaic to a certain extent, throwing in everything you can find in a typical spy movie. But it's executed properly it gives you no reason to be mad at it. I read the book, and I find this to be an excellent adaptation. I even respect the modifications incorporated in the series, deviating just enough to make the story flow more fluidly, without losing too much of what makes this a work inspired by le Carre. And lastly, I love that Burr is a pregnant woman in this series.

Hands down my favorite mini series of all time. Ive watched it through 5 times now and its just as riviting as the first time!
  • Feb 16, 2019
A well done entertaining series with great cast. However, it is just an enhanced version of the typical story where terrorists are arabs and a good looking western man saves the day.

Binge-watched over 2 days... FANTASTIC. Hooked from the first scene and loved the intricate plot and the sheer brilliance of the ending. Tom Hiddleston is captivating and Hugh Laurrie superb. Gonna binge-watch again... when I get a chance.
