Totally over-the-top and melodramatic - laughably so at times - but hugely enjoyable and entertaining. I really looked forward to it each week, as it makes for perfect Sunday night viewing - a sumptuous bit of fluff to envelope yourself in.

Jonathan Pine doesn't shoot bad guys, and the one fistfight he gets into with multiple people, he loses badly. Instead, Pine is the most charming, intelligent, seductive spy on television.

With Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie heading a perfect cast and Oscar-winning director Susanne Bier calling the shots, this adaptation-and-update of the John le Carré thriller is a ripper.

The Night Manager is almost doggedly devoted to showing its steps, but that just makes the payoff feel earned.

It's implausibilities are neatly disguised by screenwriter David Farr and Danish director Susanne Bier... She earns vivid work from the whole cast and vastly improves the book's sexual politics.

This is a GORGEOUS television series, with jet-setting locales and a series of extremely well-fitted suits for Hiddleston.

The Night Manager's plot never functions by obfuscation or by willfully withholding important information. Instead, its story is one of clarity and momentum-not to mention nail-biting suspense.

Writer David Farr has updated the novel for TV. His referencing of current conflicts in the Middle East helps give The Night Manager a compelling immediacy. It's a glossy, lavish drama and a Sunday-night winner.

A story that succeeds in the telling: in the work of Hiddleston, Laurie, and Colman and the steady hand of their director: notable feature-film helmer Susanne Bier. [Blu-ray]

The brilliance of a show like The Night Manager is the tightness of its storytelling.

From the undulating shapes and symbols in the opening credits to Hiddleston's enigmatic, slightly perturbing performance as the show's hero, the entire product feels like nothing so much as the world's most elaborate audition tape for 007.

Bier's direction, along with the acting and script, is what makes the production shine.

This bottomless inner life is mostly absent from this version of Pine, but Hiddleston sure keeps the show humming along, scarcely giving us a chance to notice.

If you're a cloak and dagger enthusiast, you won't be disappointed. Even if you aren't, it's still very entertaining.
