I'm not quite hooked. And if others feel the same way and with the overabundance of TV options today, then that doesn't bode well for The Odd Couple.

This show is sort of everything that is wrong with network sitcoms these days.

Oscar will teach Felix to unwind a little; Felix will smooth Oscar's rough edges. Repeat until syndication money rolls in.

Watching this watery remake, one is struck by the horrifying, Twilight Zone notion that we'll all be strapped to hospital beds in the not-too-distant future, watching the premiere of a remake of Two and a Half Men and unable to reach a clicker.

The result is a laugh-free, thought-free enterprise that wastes talent, time and the benefits of a Big Bang lead-in.

This latest production is not completely terrible; it just underscores the sad state of affairs on network television, where programmers are seriously hurting for a fresh idea.

Perry and Lennon are good in their respective roles and have certainly got the talent to bring this to life. Let's hope they do before everyone switches off.

Unlikely friends mock each other endlessly in stale sitcom.

Much of The Odd Couple's pilot episode pays homage to its source material... but Perry and Lennon seem to have fun with this modern-day retelling, despite the decades-old story at its core.

Friends veteran Matthew Perry, who helped develop this version and serves as executive producer, might just be the weakest Oscar of any version.

The CBS version is the first to suggest the concept has lost its elasticity. It feels like nothing so much as a sock that won't stay up on its own, but which you can't throw out because you've had it around forever.

I say with confidence that this is the most pointless remake that I've ever seen. It is still 1970, right?

I really, really wanted to like this pilot and the truth is, I didn't. But, that's not to say that I won't give the series a bit of a chance.

The oddest thing about The Odd Couple is that it took Perry, Lennon, Bibb, Lindsay Sloane, Dave Foley, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Wendell Pierce and wasted every molecule of their combined talents.

The problem? Maybe it's the speed with which all this unfolds, but too often in this first episode things feel awkward, as if the dialogue were written mostly to set up jokes, and therefore the character part of the story seems forced.

While some jokes land, and some characters hint at what they might do once they get something to do, the show - which is to say, the pilot - never really lights up.

It could be unbearable, and it's not.

The focus, however, remains on Perry and Lennon. By pilot's end, they've evoked a bit of a bond, which is better than nothing. But why bother? Their Odd Couple feels like the kind of time-filling time killer that's chasing viewers to other options.

Despite plundering Simon's original language and bits and pieces from each of the previous adaptations, the new The Odd Couple has no rhythm, mostly for fear of showing two men dancing together too well.
February 19, 2015
The Odd Couple is genial - but not hilarious - multi-cam sitcom business as usual.
