It's a handsome production, lush and lavish, and yet determinedly authentic in its attention to detail.

While not without its flaws, The Pacific appears poised to take its place in that noble line of cautionary tales of soldiers called upon to hurl themselves into a breach that no sane human would desire to fill.

Total immersion in hell - that's the effect of this pulverizing miniseries.

This is powerful, overwhelming, defiantly cinematic television.

[Tom] Hanks doesn't appear in it, and [Steven] Spielberg didn't direct any of it, but make no mistake: Their attention to detail and demand for quality and authenticity runs through every frame.

In addition to the great story telling, The Pacific is blessed with fantastic performances from a whole slew of talented actors.

The Pacific is not Band of Brothers. In this case, I think that's a good thing.

Bursting with epic sprawl and extravagance. But like any effective film of its kind, it also contains a brand of intimacy that will have you bonding with its characters and caring deeply about their fates.

Such is the strength of The Pacific: the witnessing of both brutality and humanity on an almost incomprehensible scale.

The soldiers' stories struggle to impose themselves against the relentless pyrotechnics.

It is both historical document and something that feels remarkably current. And, most of all, it is amazing, riveting television of a caliber that does not come along too often. You don't want to miss a minute.

Visceral enough to leave viewers shaking, but emotional enough to leave a mark hours and days later, The Pacific may or may not equal the overall quality of Band of Brothers, but it's certainly a worthy companion. That's high praise.

Conveys a sense of the combat experience that is as complete and realistic as any work of film could be.

Band Of Brothers was a hymn to comradeship; The Pacific is a moving lament to lost innocence.

The Pacific is powerful, insightful and unmissable watching. The battle scenes in particular are outstanding and the sense of atmosphere created, a mixture of desperation and constant impending danger, is exceptional.

It's certainly big (at 10 parts and a cost approaching $200 million, it's HBO's most expensive gamble ever) and well crafted.

It manages to convey the particular horror of the Pacific theater of operations, but it's often saddled by too much exposition, unnecessary backstories, and an overindulgence in sentimentality.

If you adored "Saving Private Ryan" and "Band of Brothers" (I enjoyed but didn't love both), then "The Pacific" is well worth your time.

What the production most sorely lacks, though, is a strong sense of cohesion, which often makes the hours play more like loosely assembled snapshots of the war without a compelling hook to pull the audience along.
