It's one of the most powerful viewing experiences in the history of the medium.

Bursting with epic sprawl and extravagance. But like any effective film of its kind, it also contains a brand of intimacy that will have you bonding with its characters and caring deeply about their fates.

Conveys a sense of the combat experience that is as complete and realistic as any work of film could be.

It's certainly big (at 10 parts and a cost approaching $200 million, it's HBO's most expensive gamble ever) and well crafted.

If you adored "Saving Private Ryan" and "Band of Brothers" (I enjoyed but didn't love both), then "The Pacific" is well worth your time.

What the production most sorely lacks, though, is a strong sense of cohesion, which often makes the hours play more like loosely assembled snapshots of the war without a compelling hook to pull the audience along.

There are scenes that will horrify you... For those who can stomach them, however, this is spectacular and profound TV.

An undoubtedly impressive effort, "The Pacific" represents HBO's full firepower...

There's no question that the creators of "The Pacific" set out to honor the marines' experience; they haven't exactly failed to do that, but neither have they succeeded in leading viewers to a deeper appreciation of this-then and now-faraway war.

When The Pacific really gets going (as it does in a few episodes), it's like few other World War II depictions out there, and these scenes feel like every other World War II depiction out there.

I'll say now, before I get down to picking its nits -- it has a few, and most might be predicted from the Spielberg oeuvre -- that it's a splendid production, absolutely worth watching in its 10-hour entirety.

There's no denying the massive achievement that is "The Pacific,'' the new miniseries from Hollywood's history professors, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg.
November 22, 2017
This is an overdue but fittingly painstaking and lavish tribute to men who were never supposed to have been forgotten.
November 22, 2017
The experience of watching it is more visceral and relentless, but as rewarding in its own way.
November 22, 2017
Even those who know already that the Pacific theater was like no other in the war may be shocked by the harrowing combat re-created here.
November 22, 2017
A string of writers and directors (and mostly unrecognizable young actors) have managed to create a war film that takes its toll on the viewer in a way few films have.

... an equally spectacular, equally triumphant yet tonally divergent work that stands with Band of Brothers...

Without question, "The Pacific" is one of the stellar TV events of the year - of many years.

The series unfolds intimately behind the soldiers' individual stories - but works broadly, showing us the scope of the war in that other part of the world that few Americans could find on a map.

It creates marvelous drama from a highly chaotic, confusing series of battlefields, and follows men who aren't best buddies, but who are complex combinations of heroes, innocents, cynics, and damaged goods.
