The heady brew of eroticism and surreal mysticism can be seductive, but the show's unsteady tone makes it hard to want to swallow the Kool-Aid.

The Path mostly is notable for Aaron Paul giving his all in the service of a role that finds him on familiar shaky ground in a series with too many ruts.

It's frustrating when a series hitches its drama to a lack of communication as its primary conceit because the solution seems so simple.
December 3, 2018
The Path's twisting and emotionally jarring story of a cult-ish communal following stands up to the best that any networks or other streaming services have to offer.
June 14, 2018
Overall, it's not a bad beginning to a series intent on exploring human suffering and the lengths people will go to in order to stop hurting.

Cult and religion, and the difference between the two - assuming there is a real difference between the two - is the backbone of The Path, a smart, haunting new series that premieres on Hulu today.

Scientology, and any "coincidental resemblances to it," may pique viewers' interest, but The Path doesn't need it to sustain a tense, layered drama.

The true test of any high-concept show is how readily the viewer buys in to its internal logic, how quickly that ideology becomes just a channel for rewarding character study. The Path achieves this almost from the outset.

The Path proves that it can do just fine on its own merits.
May 29, 2016
The series shows immense potential for growth into new territories, bigger plots and even more psychologically thrilling twists and turns.

Even in that less-than-gripping first hour, Eddie and Sarah's story line is the least engrossing, in large part because the talented Paul and Monaghan are asked to play circumstances, not characters.

It's a storyline that takes some sophistication to appreciate.

The Path is not a rollicking Scientology takedown but a more measured, slow-building dismantling of the insidious accommodations required to maintain absolute religious certainty.

The Path is not a great TV show - not yet - but it's great-adjacent.

We've only previewed the first couple of episodes, but we're convinced that Hulu's latest drama could develop more than just a cult following.
March 31, 2016
It's a compelling but slow and dire series that falls into that mid-range of long-form TV drama, where you're interested enough to keep watching till the season is through.

The Path is definitely a show that exists. That is a fact. You won't be questioning its existence the way I was left questioning why anyone would want to join the Meyerist movement after watching the first two episodes of Hulu's newest original drama.

It's a lot, enough to keep The Path jumping along with plot developments and metaphorical twists. None of which is as interesting as watching the various characters, main and otherwise, grapple with the benefits and requirements of faith.

Although it took me a while to accept the premise of the show, I cannot deny that it is well-made and thoughtful, if mostly concerned with the thoughts and feelings of very frustrating people.

I'm sure there are going to be many converts to The Path, but it left me an agnostic.
