The Path mostly is notable for Aaron Paul giving his all in the service of a role that finds him on familiar shaky ground in a series with too many ruts.

Overall, it's not a bad beginning to a series intent on exploring human suffering and the lengths people will go to in order to stop hurting.

The Path is not a rollicking Scientology takedown but a more measured, slow-building dismantling of the insidious accommodations required to maintain absolute religious certainty.

It's a compelling but slow and dire series that falls into that mid-range of long-form TV drama, where you're interested enough to keep watching till the season is through.

It's a lot, enough to keep The Path jumping along with plot developments and metaphorical twists. None of which is as interesting as watching the various characters, main and otherwise, grapple with the benefits and requirements of faith.

Although it took me a while to accept the premise of the show, I cannot deny that it is well-made and thoughtful, if mostly concerned with the thoughts and feelings of very frustrating people.

As an off-kilter family drama, it packs quite a punch.

Not all of the scenes manage the efficient storytelling of these episodes' more visually-minded sequences, but if it embraces its visual flourishes and trusts its talented cast, The Path has the potential to be a strong addition to Hulu's lineup.

Worse yet for the show's dramatic purposes, the belief system they're battling over is so indistinct that it barely exists.

Dancy, taut as an ascetic and grimly magnetic, is the one to watch as Cal, who believes so deeply in the potential of Meyerism to heal the world one soul at a time that he will use whatever means necessary to achieve his aim.

The Path works best as an intense psychological study of an extended family whose members equate faith and loyalty with happiness.
March 29, 2016
The execution, while offering glimpses into a fascinating subculture, is sluggish and unfocused. The Path is literally cult TV, but no cult classic.

The Meyerists inhabit a strange world, but the way we learn its rules over the course of a 10-episode season could convert any viewer into a true believer in The Path.

Its strength as a drama is in the depiction of men waging subtle wars for power over vulnerable and deluded people.

Whatever its destiny, this welcome addition to Hulu's stable of original programming is a uniquely engrossing family drama, as distinguished by strong character-driven writing and a talented ensemble cast.

The Path has many things working in its favor, not least of all the way it takes a leap into big questions of faith.

Dark and fascinating.
