The pilot is just preposterous both in how it delivers its story, and how it asks audiences to invest in its premise. There's something here, but The Player's first script is nowhere near ready to embrace it.

Absolutely nothing that occurs here is believable in the slightest. But does that matter? Absolutely not.

It veers between deeply implausible to formulaic and slightly predictable. And, when you've got Wesley Snipes and a Vegas setting you expect something more.

For its combination of silliness revved up to a furious pace, The Player is, as I said at the start, watchable - the kind of visual junk food that you find yourself consuming for an hour before you realize 60 minutes have passed.

From the producers of The Blacklist, The Player has the same witty mock-formal vibe - giving Snipes the full Spader treatment. He's all debonair evil, constantly adjusting his tie and smiling at how cunningly he's screwed over everybody else.

The pilot for NBC's The Player reminded me of trying to play checkers with chess pieces. The rules are still the same on paper and you can find some enjoyment out of it. Ultimately though, it works much better with the original pieces.

Despite all the distractions, The Player gets at least one thing right: It seemingly knows that it is dumb, delightfully trashy television that, notwithstanding its narrative shortcomings, will seemingly go to any length to please its audience.

NBC dealt one too many cards from the deck because The Player is basically absurd with a dollop of stupid on top and a whole bunch of empty tossed in for filler.

The crime series combines a unique premise with predictable narratives to create a viewing experience that is both edgy and entertaining.

But one thing was made clear in the pilot episode of the new NBC series: the house always wins - or to be more specific - Mr. Johnson always wins.

It's not uncommon to see a series recycled from the parts of far better ones, but it's exceedingly rare to find one that does as little with those parts as The Player.

The Player has the potential to be enjoyable even if the premise seems like a high-risk, low-reward gamble.

The Player might not be the dumbest show of all time ... but it's up there.

Sure, Thursday's pilot is junk, but it's pretty, diligent junk, essentially The Whopper of action TV, heaped high with mayhem condiments.

Do you want to see a sharp-dressed Wesley Snipes beat up some people in Las Vegas? Of course you do. I do. We all do. But it isn't exactly essential viewing week to week. Save it for later.

Within the first two episodes of Heroes Reborn - which air back-to-back for its Thursday-night premiere - it becomes clear that this is still very much the same show that played four seasons and outstayed its welcome by three.
September 24, 2015
It's beyond preposterous; it sets a new standard for tin-eared Hollywood figuring somebody would go for this stuff.
September 24, 2015
Though it has some slick car chases, The Player lacks the wit, ingenuity and originality to inspire curiosity about what's going to happen next.
September 24, 2015
And no, despite the presence of an under-employed Wesley Snipes and whatever wan hopes NBC might have had, there are no signs in The Player that the show could ever have been more than a standard-issue, hunky crime-fighter, mindlessly competent TV show.
September 24, 2015
The premise is repugnant, and the execution is preposterous.
