The Prisoner: Miniseries Reviews

September 4, 2019
It's fitfully interesting, intermittently compelling, but, on average, terribly dull.

The result proves perhaps not surprisingly frustrating -- a very British six-hour, three-night event that features striking images and arresting moments but can't overcome a persistent lack of coherence.
November 23, 2009
It's self-absorbed to the point of incoherence.

I suspect that this somewhat gutless iteration is still likely to enrage die-hard "Prisoner" fans.
November 23, 2009
It's frequently too choppy and elliptical to build up much suspense or dramatic impact.

This Prisoner is visually stunning and risk-taking but not a satisfying rethinking.

Failing to breathe life into it is just disappointing, if not entirely unexpected.

"The Prisoner" -- a remake of a legendary 1967 original -- at least takes viewers to relatively uncharted territory and dares to wrestle with an actual idea or two.
November 23, 2009
It's filled with deep thoughts, deep meaning, cultural allusions and comparisons galore.

This version of "The Prisoner" is not a remake, it's a clever and engaging reinterpretation by Bill Gallagher, who shaped the script to contemporary tastes and sensibilities - notably, a postmodern fatigue with ideology and big thoughts.

Little here resonates with this world.

Obscurity is no longer a novelty - and this thuddingly pretentious adaptation of The Prisoner has little else to offer.

If you are one of the tens of fans of the 1960s Brit cult series "The Prisoner," may I suggest you particularly stay away from AMC's excruciatingly long remake.

Looking for logic in a remake of "The Prisoner" - even if you've never seen the original version - is like asking for two-fisted shoot-outs on "Mad Men," or for more tasteful humor on "Two and a Half Men."
November 23, 2009
For the characters and for the viewers, the miniseries is a plodding excursion on the road to nowhere.
