Its moves aren't always perfect, but between Anya Taylor-Joy's magnetic performance, incredibly realized period details, and emotionally intelligent writing, The Queen's Gambit is an absolute win.

Anchored by a magnetic lead performance and bolstered by world-class acting, marvelous visual language, a teleplay that's never less than gripping, and an admirable willingness to embrace contradiction and ambiguity, it's one of the year's best series.

The Queen's Gambit is undeniably sentimental, but I would argue that it's the various ways it holds back that makes it so effective.

Part addiction drama, part rags to riches story just teeters on the edge of intrigue with solid all-round performances, but at times it felt a bit too stretched out to fully achieve a checkmate.

That Beth's exquisite, porcelain features remain so remarkably untouched by the scourge of alcohol and drug abuse is one of the few flaws in an otherwise fabulously entertaining tale of how an orphaned girl found herself through the mastery of chess.

A brilliantly and well crafted show on a book with the same name. From the acting to the story telling, it's certainly a show you want to watch all the way through. It's a refreshing show to pick up and one of the best I've watched this year.

Would've been perfect if they actually showed the matches and explained the moves so that audience could appreciate the brilliance of the moves but still a good watch.

The Queen's Gambit Miniseries (starring Anya Taylor-Joy) originated from the Novel (of the same name) by Walter Tevis. A novel in which wouldn't have done the story justice as anyone without a basic knowledge for chess wouldn't have to be able to follow as though written in a foreign lingo. The series however brings the whole concept and story to life. Where you don't have to have any previous knowledge of the game. The images portrayed in the series tell enough to keep everyone on the same page. It is absolutely marvelous and highly intelligent! Such an outstanding series that tells such an important story. The Queen's Gambit tells the life story of a young female, Elizabeth Harmon. An orphan with a passion for chess. She is incredibly smart and longs to make it in the big tournaments someday. Harmon has been looked down on her entire life simply because she is female and because of her sex people treat her differently. She is urged not to play chess and to join a social class like the other girls her age. She is challenged in life as she turns to alcoholism and drugs to deal with the pressures of her daily life. But she defies all expectations and brings home win after win. Until finally she takes on the worlds best chess players.

What a great series. Well developed, with a nice slow burn first episode setting the series up, with some great acting and a lovely script as well. Thoroughly enjoyable with a refreshingly alternative subject matter.

This show was absolutely captivating I was drawn into this series. Enough that I drew out my old board and started playing myself. I also love that so many people are seeing there is so much more to chess as well. I hope you enjoy this series as much as I did. Have a great day!
