The Real O'Neals: Season 1 Reviews

While Savage's own views on sex and religion have been labeled by some as "controversial," this fictionalized take on his Catholic adolescence is surprisingly conventional when you strip it down to its core elements.

Like The Middle or The Goldbergs, the show is a sunny, single-camera comedy with occasional flights of fancy, but like Black-ish, it's not afraid to go after tougher issues in a funny way.

The Real O'Neals isn't an attack on the Catholic faith so much as it's a tweak against those who put entirely too much pressure on themselves and their families while caring entirely too much about what other people think.

ABC's new comedy The Real O'Neals isn't as biting or controversial as conservative protesters would have you believe, but it works perfectly fine as a typical family sitcom.

Give it some time. ABC has had such a killer record with shows like this (The Goldbergs, The Middle, and even the ageing Modern Family are all equally excellent) that I can't imagine this won't find its groove.

Above all, there is Plimpton (of Raising Hope, and so much more), the anchor here, as she seems to be wherever she goes.

It's not the hippest or the most cult-ready show to hit the airwaves, but The Real O'Neals is upbeat, silly in all the right ways, and serves as another example of ABC's quiet takeover of broadcast comedy.

Behold one of the more promising family sitcoms we've seen in a while.

It's above-average without being top tier. But ABC has proven its mettle in the kid-centric comedy arena, so it's best not to under-estimate this one's staying power or potential for growth.

An irreverent, fantastical approach in line with ABC's winning roster of family comedies.

If you're on the fence about giving O'Neals a shot, do so for the two stars alone.

The show... manages to be completely of the moment - and damn funny, too.

The Real O'Neals is yet another fit for the (ABC) network. It doesn't start smoothly, but as we always say, comedies often require extra time to find their footing and with Plimpton, Ferguson and Galvin, the right pieces are in place.

Real O'Neals is funny, offbeat and sweet in its depiction of a loving family whose members are sometimes their own worst enemies.

In a world where everyone's offended by something, The Real O'Neals won't escape unscathed. But it finds its own firm middle ground.

The Real O'Neals is well written, funny and well acted, and has universal appeal because of those family secrets. Everyone's hypocritical to one degree or another some time in their lives, regardless of race, religion, sexuality, prejudice or ignorance.

What makes The Real O'Neals so much fun is that it's entirely recognizable in its depiction of people who are most concerned about what others think of them.

At the end of The Real O'Neals' rainbow, there's a pot of gold full of engrossing issues and problems for its titular family to face - just be ready to wade through some formulaic sitcom fodder to get there.
