The Red Road: Season 1 (2014)

Critic Consensus: The Red Road suffers from uneven writing, but its talented cast and creepy story hint at undeveloped promise.

Tv Season Info

Cable drama about Sheriff Harold Jensen (Martin Henderson) trying to keep peace in two worlds while policing the small New Jersey town in which he grew up and the nearby Native American settlement, where he finds himself crossing paths with Phillip Kopus (Jason Momoa), an ex-con and member of the tribe. At the same time, Jensen is dealing at home with an emotionally unstable wife (Julianne Nicholson). With the disappearance of a college student, both communities are on edge, and during the course of the investigation, secrets come to light that impact both the local townsfolk and the Native Americans. Later, Jensen becomes caught between the law and a compromise he entered into with Kopus, whose criminal activities have him involved in dealings with Albanian mobsters. In the season finale, a violent showdown pits the sheriff and the ex-con against the vicious, vengeful underworld hoods.

The Red Road feels like it might play better as one giant movie than as something doled out week to week.

Red Road gets more gripping by the hour.

From beginning to end, The Red Road lets Jason Momoa walk all over it, trampling any potential for conflict or spark. The best shows can dazzle us with strong characters. But strong characters can crush weak shows.

The deliberate pacing and slow revelation of key motivations and certain relationships don't make it easy on viewers, but you didn't tune in for "Law & Order: Mahwah."

It simply tells an engrossing story well, with a welcome lack of melodrama and self-aggrandizing and an appropriate level of violence.

The Red Road demands patience, but from what I've seen, it strongly suggests that will be rewarded.

While The Red Road is gorgeous to look at, and the ideas behind it can be intriguing, it gets mired in attempts to string out what little plot is there over a six episode first season.

Whether this finely acted slow-burner can unravel the exhausting amount of mysteries introduced in its pilot remains to be seen, but I'm looking forward to travelling down The Red Road.

The Red Road doesn't play much catch-up for viewers, and one gets the sense that it won't be until the final episode of the series airs that everything makes sense. That's the type of storytelling people want in their TV series now.

Anyone anticipating the next Breaking Bad will have to keep waiting. This is an awfully dull detour.
