Reigning as one of the pioneers of sketch comedy, The Richard Pryor Show unapologetically whisks audiences into the realm of farce.

Few sketch shows shone brighter or burned out quicker than Richard Pryor's.

On several levels, despite the humorous surfaces, the material is both bitter and militant, delivering the message that "black is beautiful."

Sep 14, 2018 | Full Review…

Much of the entertainer's font of observations was attributed to his own wrestling with personal demons: a dramatic push-me-pull-you relationship between success in a predominantly white industry and his own racial allegiance.

Sep 14, 2018 | Full Review…

The skit is as glorious as it is bizarre and random. The late, legendary actor Richard Pryor once bartended at the Mos Eisley Cantina - or at least he pretended to for laughs.

Family-friendly viewing not being Pryor's first priority, he clashed with the censors again and again until finally they let him off with only four episodes. These four episodes are still credited with an enormous influence over TV sketch comedy.

Sep 14, 2018 | Full Review…

The Richard Pryor Show, depends too much on the comedy of black people being in places that black people wouldn't ordinarily be, in lengthy routines with no real point beyond the incongruity.

The struggle to conform Pryor's uncompromising genius to shticky '70s TV standards drains the enterprise of a lot of its humor, but it's still fascinating to watch.

Sep 14, 2018 | Full Review…

The show was probably years ahead of its time, thus it didn't do that well in the ratings and Pryor reportedly fought constantly with NBC execs, so the show only lasted four episodes. (Too bad Comedy Central wasn't around back then.)

Sep 14, 2018 | Full Review…

Like Pryor's stand-up routine, the show was a mix of satire, social commentary, straight comedy, and the occasional dramatic bit.

Sep 14, 2018 | Full Review…

Pryor dutifully delivered one of the most brilliant, controversial - and quickly canceled - series in television history.
