What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Rig may not plumb its full potential thanks to too many crude clichés, but this supernatural eco-thriller has enough ambience and appealing performances to make for a solid binge.

Majestically engineered daftness — the best kind. Go to Full Review

This supernatural thriller about the trapped crew of a North Sea oil rig never quite escapes a boilerplate set-up and its familiar genre tropes Go to Full Review

It feels kind of like a Doctor Who ship siege episode, on the water. And scarier! Because, well, you know what happens when you stare too long into the abyss. Go to Full Review

There’s a feeling that Macpherson, Strickland et al are delaying the inevitable: biding time and going through the motions, putting off the big reveal. Go to Full Review

The casting is excellent, John Strickland does exactly what he needs to do as director, and there’s real suspense and real agony within the narrative. Go to Full Review

Ashley K @Ashley430 Dec 20 Great sci-fi take on the under explored deep ocean based on what science we do know. See more Naveen D @RT56815715 Oct 15 The Rig is a thrilling sci-fi drama that perfectly blends mystery, science, and suspense. Set on a remote oil rig in the North Sea, it follows a crew suddenly cut off from the world after a strange, unexplained fog descends. The tension, atmosphere, and curiosity build with every episode, keeping you thinking and guessing throughout. I personally loved the scientific angle and the eerie isolation vibe—it’s both thought-provoking and chilling. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys intelligent sci-fi with mystery and emotional depth. See more Stelly C @RT84768311 Aug 27 Poor script, everything predictable and by the episode 4 ,you just realise even tho there was lots of action, nothing much has actually happened. Two guys sitting in a control room at the bottom of the rig messing around and nobody notices nothing from the main control room.😅😅 See more David J @RT83083202 Jul 24 The plot hinges entirely on every single person making the worst possible decisions at every opportunity. I get that horror as a genre often relies on poor decision-making, but trusting the mustache twirlingly evil corporate stooge when he does nothing but lie and kill people makes the last few episodes virtually unwatchable. See more Frans B @FransB 03/22/2025 Had high hopes because it seemed appealing, but unfortunately not so. Cast, production, everything seems uncoordinated and haphazard. That whispering is very off-putting. Abandoned after a couple of episodes because of too many unanswered questions, seemingly incoherent writing and dialogue. See more K F @RT29864102 02/15/2025 Considering the cast and the director, I was really excited for this show. I gave the first season a chance thinking a rocky start has to get better. The characters are all predictable and 2 dimensional. Iain Glen, who I really like, is really unlikeable but you can tell it's the bad scripts. The huge disappointment is Emily Hampshire who is unbearably bad and it doesn't feel like it's the writers' fault wit her. Spoiler: Season 2 gets a lot worse. See more Read all reviews
