Critic Reviews for The Righteous Gemstones Season 1

All Critics (31) | Top Critics (13)

What it is though is a rascally comedy with pacing issues and an occasional zinger - and lots of peen, which pops up (or not, as it were) at least once every episode.

The show barely scratches the surface before reverting to a more conventional crime-dramedy mode. And so the familiarity of McBride's M.O. disheartens.

With that tight focus on these characters comes a need to differentiate them from similar characters we've seen before. That's the show's most significant flaw.

The Righteous Gemstones is uneven but solid and engaging; I'm already dying to know what happens next. In a way, it's reflective of the megachurches it skewers: It's so easy to find yourself dazzled and buy into it completely.

The Righteous Gemstones is hallelujah-worthy for its performances, energy, comedy, dramedy and occasional little heart tugs.

Putting characters first is rarely a bad idea with ongoing TV series, and McBride ensures viewers will want to keep coming back just to see more of what this cast can do.

Will the show convert any skeptics to McBride's style of comedy? Probably not. But for those already in the flock, The Righteous Gemstones is a case of preaching to the choir.

Sure, all the Gemstones are still ridiculous, and played that way. But the show has empathy for them, too, and recognizes that they're still people, even when they're terrible people.

The Righteous Gemstones is smart about what happens when you decide money is core to your faith, because money has a way of tainting itself.

Even without the surprising amount of research that went into the premiere, The Righteous Gemstones already feels like another solid hit from McBride and Hill.

The characters are completely unsympathetic, which might be okay if they had some redeeming qualities, but they don't. We totally understand why Jesse's son ran away and we hope he gets caught in his sex scandal. The show is not particularly funny and makes a joke out of cyclic child abuse. Also an Evangelist preacher family seems like pretty low hanging fruit for comedy.

Holy Awesome! Danny McBride's Third HBO Comedy Series starts off with a brilliant pilot! Hilarious! I'm very relieved that Barry (finished Season 2) and Veep (Ended its seventh and final season) are currently off the air, HBO is not letting the programming becoming too dramatic.

Another great hit by Danny McBride. The show doesn't attack religion, but rather portrays the hypocrisy of certain greedy Tevangelist leaders who are not what they appear to be. Great cast and cinematography. Looking forward to more episodes

A bunch of people are going to be butt hurt about this show, and that's kinda the point. It is a funny original show that speaks volumes to the hypocrisy of megachurches while having an engaging plot, and is really funny. It has similar humor to Vice Principals, also on HBO, and I think the story is going to be wrapped up in a similar fashion. A couple seasons, and nothing drawn out past its expiration. Excited to see where it goes. Also, I would bet a lot of money that half the users who rate this show have not seen a single episode, and are doing so at the request of some religious institution, leader, or ideology... Ironic eh.

    Grating, annoying, and not entertaining.

I admit at first it felt like the typical HBO comedy and McBride's familiar formula was evident. But, I was quick to realize the writing is going much deeper with this one and I for one am immediately glued to this story line. The cast is perfect and the comedic vibe isn't too strong to cover the drama that's unfolding. I can't wait for next week!
