Supernatural violence, some language in so-so spy thriller.

The Rook is an interesting and risky adaptation of Daniel O'Malley's novel. [Full Review in Spanish]

[an] enthralling supernatural thriller [novel] becomes an office drama. It's toothless...and so disappointing.

In the age of superheroes, the Rook characters' collective powers feel a tad underwhelming.
July 3, 2019
The opening episode is something of a drag, and given how much is going on in the pilot, it really shouldn't be.
July 2, 2019
The Rook has plenty to recommend it, but it often gets caught in the space between a pulpy genre thriller and a stony-faced espionage serial, too dark and constantly fighting its most promising abilities.

There's definitely a show worth watching in there, but the second half of the season will need to be excellent to offset the mediocrity of the earlier episodes.

There's a lot of silliness in The Rook, but there's also more than enough to stay with the show for an episode or three to see if things pick up.

It's a slow-burn mystery in its first few episodes, but we have high hopes that this meticulously-made drama will reward careful viewing as our heroine works to uncover who erased her memories and why.

Surrounded by more or less friendly characters, and with a solemn tone that does not suit it, 'The Rook' is a nice and inconsequential pastime with which to combat the dog days. [Full review in Spanish]

The Rook ends up feeling like is an attempt to engineer a serious-minded companion to Counterpart, except one that lacks Counterpart's twisty complexity, nuanced approach to character duality and general depth.

The Rook's memory-loss thriller is ambitious, beautiful, and full of great performances, which makes its problems easy to forget.

"The Rook" feels bogged down by what it lacks and what it offers. It's a little clunky in its structure and not great at explaining itself, despite lots of attempts.

June 27, 2019
As entertaining as it may be, "The Rook" is subject to the danger inherent in shows of its type: that the puzzles it builds so elaborately won't have sufficiently interesting answers.
June 27, 2019
It's richly imagined and boasts a fine cast, but it doesn't immediately engage.
June 27, 2019
The pilot is a beautifully made, neo-noir espionage thriller. But if you plan to stick with it, the series will lead you down strange and infuriating paths and you might feel swindled. Pity.
June 27, 2019
It's a show filled with intriguing ideas that sort of bounce around without really landing and the slick but frustratingly understated direction does little to liven it up.

Overall, The Rook feels like a missed opportunity, departing so far from its source material that it's lost its identity, while failing to build a new one that justifies its existence.

There's nothing that wrong with The Rook, but there's also nothing that right with it either. It's okay. It is what it is. It's serviceable.
