Much of the story may be familiar, though odds are that new discoveries, humorous and dramatic, await all but the most dedicated Roosevelt scholar. documentary. The Roosevelts deserve no less.

The Roosevelts is never less than thoroughly compelling, whether marching through its remarkable pageantry of history or re-telling the smaller, personal stories that played out behind the scenes.

When Eleanor had the film's last word, in a reminiscence about her husband and uncle-I won't spoil it-I got choked up in a way I expect from Parenthood, not a Presidential history.

The Roosevelts doesn't whitewash its subjects or make excuses for their missteps. It does admire them greatly, for their courage and vision.

Burns and Ward pile on so much detail, alongside so much stunning footage, that by watching this whole spread -- to borrow that famous and also well-rubbed line -- will be like arriving "where we started and know the place for the first time."
