Season 1
The Royals

Critics Consensus

The Royals is too crass and not not clever enough to rise to the level of camp it needs to rule.

Tv Season Info

The drama series, loosely based on the novel "Falling for Hamlet" by Michelle Ray, follows the lives of a fictional contemporary British royal family as they deal with betrayals, scandals and relationship issues. Season 1 opens with the death of Prince Robert, heir to the throne. While King Simon (Vincent Regan) and Queen Helena (Elizabeth Hurley) mourn their son, they also have to deal with their two remaining children, who aren't exactly the best expression of royalty: Eleanor (Alexandra Park) likes drugs, hates underwear and isn't very bright; her twin brother Liam (William Moseley) is a womanizer and next in line to the throne. The King's brother, Prince Cyrus (Jake Maskall), aspires to one day sit on the throne, and sets off a chain of events that leads to tragedies, scandals and surprises that might just grant him his wish.

Critic Reviews for The Royals Season 1

All Critics (29) | Top Critics (17)

The show leaves the impression that the writers have never met a British royal or aristocrat and have never seen how a ruling class rules.

Mar 18, 2015 | Full Review…

The Royals might have been more promising if it had been a little more ebullient and a lot more outrageous. There's something too ordinary about it. We want to be bloody gobsmacked, mate.

Mar 18, 2015 | Full Review…

The navel-gazing on this show both ruins the trashy fun of the soap opera genre and is transparently hypocritical.

Mar 16, 2015 | Full Review…

It's supposed to be wicked but the zingers don't sing; it's supposed to be campy but is just crass and, for long stretches, tedious.

Mar 16, 2015 | Full Review…

The show indulges no stereotypes of British upper-crust sophistication, instead making its royals into dull copies of any generic American celebrity clan.

Mar 13, 2015 | Full Review…

I still suspect The Royals' heart isn't entirely in this.

Mar 13, 2015 | Rating: C- | Full Review…

Yes, the drama is soap deluxe, but in the best tradition of Dynasty, Dallas and Fox's Empire, it is sharp too.

Jan 9, 2019 | Full Review…

The Royals is clearly a dramatic series. But... at times satire and parody tempt you to change the label. [Full review in Spanish]

Dec 11, 2017 | Full Review…

The Royals is just atrocious, plain and simple.

Apr 25, 2017 | Full Review…

Perhaps it's the work of a demented genius and I just don't get it. Anyway, it's already been renewed for a second series. So, incredibly, somebody must be watching.

Apr 19, 2017 | Full Review…

The Royals is at its most enjoyable when King Simon's scheming brother, Cyrus (Jake Maskall), is on screen conniving snarkily.

Mar 18, 2015 | Full Review…

IT'S NOT so good to be king in The Royals, a silly but potentially addictive soap from One Tree Hill creator Mark Schwahn.

Audience Reviews for The Royals: Season 1

  • Aug 15, 2020
This is just too aweful to watch, bad acting (especially Elizabeth Hurley but what else is new) with the exception of William Mosely, unrealistic writing.

One of the main couples begins their great love affair with rape. He lies to her about raping her while blacked out and taking photos of it to blackmail her into letting him rape her for real.

Great writers, characters and crew. Constantly moving story line, surprises around every corner. Any lead character could carry the show. Must see tv!

I loved the first season of The Royals. It was a fun, refreshing show, but it also had dramatic moments. I loved every actor in this show.

This is my Guilty Pleasure. A modern day Shakespearen play come to life many aspects of the Royals has a familiar feel. The cast is amazing. Looking forward to season 3.

If you want something serious and moving, then believe me this isn't it. This is a funny and outrageous show designed to be nothing more than a laugh, and is 100% addictive. If you take anything on this show seriously then you will not like it, but if you want a laugh, a shock at most, then this outrageous and unbelievable show is something that you will definitely not want to miss.
