Critic Reviews for The Royals Season 1
All Critics (29) | Top Critics (17) | Fresh (9) | Rotten (20)
The show leaves the impression that the writers have never met a British royal or aristocrat and have never seen how a ruling class rules.
The Royals might have been more promising if it had been a little more ebullient and a lot more outrageous. There's something too ordinary about it. We want to be bloody gobsmacked, mate.
The navel-gazing on this show both ruins the trashy fun of the soap opera genre and is transparently hypocritical.
It's supposed to be wicked but the zingers don't sing; it's supposed to be campy but is just crass and, for long stretches, tedious.
The show indulges no stereotypes of British upper-crust sophistication, instead making its royals into dull copies of any generic American celebrity clan.
I still suspect The Royals' heart isn't entirely in this.
Yes, the drama is soap deluxe, but in the best tradition of Dynasty, Dallas and Fox's Empire, it is sharp too.
The Royals is clearly a dramatic series. But... at times satire and parody tempt you to change the label. [Full review in Spanish]
The Royals is just atrocious, plain and simple.
Perhaps it's the work of a demented genius and I just don't get it. Anyway, it's already been renewed for a second series. So, incredibly, somebody must be watching.
The Royals is at its most enjoyable when King Simon's scheming brother, Cyrus (Jake Maskall), is on screen conniving snarkily.
IT'S NOT so good to be king in The Royals, a silly but potentially addictive soap from One Tree Hill creator Mark Schwahn.
Audience Reviews for The Royals: Season 1
-
Aug 15, 2020This is just too aweful to watch, bad acting (especially Elizabeth Hurley but what else is new) with the exception of William Mosely, unrealistic writing.
-
Jul 22, 2019One of the main couples begins their great love affair with rape. He lies to her about raping her while blacked out and taking photos of it to blackmail her into letting him rape her for real.
-
Oct 09, 2018Great writers, characters and crew. Constantly moving story line, surprises around every corner. Any lead character could carry the show. Must see tv!
-
Oct 08, 2018I loved the first season of The Royals. It was a fun, refreshing show, but it also had dramatic moments. I loved every actor in this show.
-
May 21, 2018Like Gossip Girl, only in London with Royals instead of rich UES kids. SO GOOD!

Dec 04, 2016This is my Guilty Pleasure. A modern day Shakespearen play come to life many aspects of the Royals has a familiar feel. The cast is amazing. Looking forward to season 3.

Nov 02, 2016Kept me watching. I can't wait for season 3! The plot continues to unravel in unexpected ways! Loved it!
-
Feb 21, 2016If you want something serious and moving, then believe me this isn't it. This is a funny and outrageous show designed to be nothing more than a laugh, and is 100% addictive. If you take anything on this show seriously then you will not like it, but if you want a laugh, a shock at most, then this outrageous and unbelievable show is something that you will definitely not want to miss.
