Critics Consensus

While it may hold few surprises for fans of the source material, The Sandman's first season satisfyingly adapts an allegedly unfilmable classic.

... This ten-part series is at its best when it veers away from its lead (and often shoddy CGI) and focuses on other characters and story arcs, particularly those involving David Thewlis... Go to Full Review

Netflix’s The Sandman is a faithful adaptation of a beloved story that’s off to a very strong start. It's exactly the kind of high-concept queer dark fantasy that you didn’t know you needed but will be very grateful it exists. Go to Full Review

It is a marvel that it ever happened, and a miracle that it’s good. That it’s as touching, rewarding, and intensely personal feels outright impossible. But, somehow, the dream is real. Go to Full Review

TheMovieSearch R @TheMovieSearch Feb 14 The first season of Sandman is a powerful and captivating series that commands attention from start to finish on Netflix. The story draws viewers in, keeping them fully invested, largely thanks to the portrayal of Dream, whose presence makes the world feel immersive and intense. The screenplay balances vulnerability and strength across characters, providing emotional depth alongside compelling plot moments. While some creative choices, like depicting Lucifer as a woman, felt unnecessary and out of timeline context, they don’t fully detract from the season’s impact. Overall, Season One is exceptionally well-crafted, engaging, and visually stunning, making it a must-watch for fans of dark fantasy and storytelling that blends intrigue, emotion, and spectacle seamlessly. See more Jason M. @bigjojo04 Jan 16 I wanted to like this more than I did but there just wasn’t enough to keep me invested. I had never read the novel/comic that this was based on, not sure if I would have liked it more had i read it, but the direction the season took just seemed a bit aimless. It went from one antagonist to the next without much drama and wrapped them all up rather quickly. And then the season finishes up with characters that don’t even get introduced until the 7th episode. It just didn’t do enough justice to the characters in the show to make me care about any of them and the lead who played Dream wasn’t very compelling to me. Lastly, not that I have any issue with the inclusion of LGBTQ characters but I just really felt there was way more included in this first season and honestly really took away from the full narrative to me. tl:dr - Uninteresting characters with antagonists that didn’t seem to have any real shot of winning and a story that jumps around too much. See more Rena R @RenaReviews Dec 8 Although I loved the story, the main thought I had the whole season was, "OMG chill, Netflix… WE GET IT!!!" I honestly would’ve given it 5 stars had Netflix just concerned themselves more with filming an entertaining show and less with "Let’s make this show as entertaining as possible… while also cramming as much propaganda as we can down our viewers throats!" As with many movies/shows of late… one demographic evil, the other good, smart, sweet, etc. Every alphabet overly represented, etc. You get it. If I say more the censor monster will get me. I hope Netflix and all the others that have been more focused on spreading their political messages will go back to focusing on entertainment. If the loss in subscribers over the last couple of years hasn’t made it obvious to the Networks… people go to you for entertainment. If they want to be preached to, they go to church. You’re not a church. See more Aaron N Dec 3 Love this show! Love the lore... great show for people into the fantasy genre. Christian mythology, comic book lore, ancient myths, death, despair, dreams, desire, & destiny... All rolled into one show. I WANT MORE!
