But Ryan Murphy always gives us something pretty to look at, or several somethings, and this is no exception. If you were in high school in the early 80s, some of this will give you Déjà vu. Hopefully not the bloody parts. The soundtrack alone is worth 4 stars. Gratuitous to the nth degree, with none of Easton Ellis' satirical bite, though it was sure aiming for that. Started with some promise but the plot and scenes just got more nonsensical as the episodes wore on. The soundtrack was a good nostalgic trip, though... as well as the nifty nostalgic Easter eggs embedded here and there. (Was I the only one to notice how the look of Debbie's Mom was pretty much modelled on Michelle Pfeiffer's character in 'Scarface?') All that 1980s decadence, beautiful cinematography, sex, drugs, obsession, and a serial killer, and somehow it still manages to feel painfully tedious. The aesthetic is doing the heavy lifting while the storytelling struggles to justify its own existence. The characters are more exhausting than intriguing, the melodrama gets old fast, and the mystery never made the investment feel worthwhile. It wants to be provocative, disturbing, and psychologically twisted, but being excessive isn't the same as being compelling. Style over substance, shock over storytelling, and an awful lot of nothing dressed up as prestige television. Ryan Murphy, I want my time back. The atmosphere, the mystery, the secrets hidden behind ordinary faces, the feeling that something terrible could be lurking beneath a seemingly perfect life… everything about it pulled me in. Isn’t she from Grease Cha cha in red and Debbie in blue having a dance off was my version of a Liverpool Everton derby. Was Andy Warhal l a perv? I hope not but this show really made him look like one- I have later learnt that Steven Reinhardt was not based fully on Andy but David Bowie and David Sylvian. Hella scream queen vibes but more gay and 80s Like all of Murphys recent tv shows, they all seem to taper off at the end and become forgettable. I hate to say it but Shards was a slog to get through for me even though i fancied most of the cast and the soundtrack was brilliant. Am I still going to watcth season two, if ti is ever made? yes. Kaia Gerber (Cindy Crawford’s daughter) was surprisingly good, and while the main character was just alright, he was cute enough that I overlooked a few things—love a short king, lol. 😂 I wasn’t sold on the other main guy, though. He just didn’t fit the mysterious, irresistible character they were trying to portray, and I couldn’t understand why everyone was so drawn to him. Overall, it had potential and was fun at first, but eventually I found myself watching each week more out of boredom than excitement. By the end, it felt more like a teenage thriller than the dark, sophisticated drama I thought I was getting. See more Read all reviews
