These might not be comforting characterizations, but they make for compelling television.

There isn't a single decent person in The Shield and that makes it the both the most devastating critique of America and the must-watch show of the season.

Does The Shield make for good television? Only if you think good TV stimulates and provokes.

The cast is excellent and the writing is competent -- but the show could be better than it is.

Mackey and Aceveda are just two of a show full of interesting characters played by a strong cast that includes CCH Pounder, Jay Kames, Catherine Dent and Michael Jace.

From the first the last...[the pilot] is a riveting, unsettling introduction to a show that will be all about, as Mackey (Michael Chiklis) describes himself, not a good cop or a bad cop but "a different kind of cop."

[The season 1 finale] is easily the hardest episode of The Shield yet.

Chiklis plays this role to the hilt, lavishly displaying Vic's arrogance while letting us catch an occasional glimmer of his conscience.

No, this is not a show for sissies.
August 8, 2018
The writing is superb, the acting performances top notch, and there are plenty of other nuances that, compacted, make this cop show one painful punch in the gut.

The Shield is one of the best television shows ever made, full stop, overflowing with powerful performances and top-shelf writing. It's an ultraviolent, sleazy, thrilling, impossibly twisty series... Really, I can't say enough good things about it.

The show grabs the viewer by the throat from the very first episode - the shocking ending of which sets up seven seasons of superb drama.

The Shield may be unoriginal, but as commercial entertainment it is also sleek, provocative and dynamic.
