The Sinner is a throwback to classic mystery television, but with the kind of craft now common in this age of peak TV. It drips with atmosphere, strong performances, and a plot that confuses us in a good way.
As played by Natalie Paul, [Heather] is a striking presence and there are arresting performances, too, from Tracy Letts as her father and from Carrie Coon...as the cult leader who claims to be Julian's mother.
It's weirder than its predecessor... It may run out of steam, too, but it feels like a story better-designed to play out over a full season; there are so many more moments that will inspire profanity-laced questions about what could be happening here.
