Unsettling and familiar.

The Sinner is a hell of a lot of fun, and it anchors its sensationalist material with grounded performances and dispassionate camerawork.

In essence, making the motive the mystery, as opposed to the identity of the killer, represents the smallest of twists, but works plenty well if it's executed properly.

That's what this season of The Sinner is: an intelligent August thriller that'll hook you in so firmly, it'd be impossible to disengage from its grasp, even if Carrie Coon were not involved.

Season 2 continues to pull viewers in with a carefully curated balance of talent and story.

Coon is perfectly enigmatic, not quite the season's villain and yet utterly unsettling whether evincing chilly, clipped leadership or in her few moments of emotional release.
