Chris Messina's portrayal of Nick is very disquieting. He has a boyish charm that never completely dissolves even when he's playing a brooding, serious character which makes him the perfect enigma as the heart of the tragedy.

That's where The Sinner has always excelled: mystery. The series' commitment to slowly unraveling its plot layer by layer is unlike anything else currently on air.

[It] builds that pressure about as meticulously as any other drama on TV. The main question as this season goes forward is how effectively that tension will be harnessed to illuminate something outside its own continuation.

It's a tension that only builds throughout each episode, as Jamie is someone who is willing to do terrible things but will still ultimately process it as being someone else's fault.
