The Son: Season 1 (2017)

SEASON:

TOMATOMETER

Critic Consensus: The Son's epic narrative and strong central performance are crippled by sluggish pacing, hasty direction, and superficial execution.

Critic Reviews for The Son Season 1

All Critics (27) | Top Critics (17)

While AMC is known for some of TV's best dramas, and while the cinematography in The Son is grand, this western doesn't promise to become more than "Dallas" on the frontier.

While I wish The Son was more dramatically engaging, it is certainly the kind of program that warrants thematic dissection and discussion. And we can't have enough of those.

Brosnan is back on TV! Now that we've gotten past the most exciting part of The Son, the show looks good, too.

Missed opportunities and hard choices propel The Son. It echoes Giant and Dallas yet holds the nostalgia to deliver a fresh, engrossing take on Westerns.

There's potential here, but The Son needs to be a bit quicker on the draw.

The Son is destined to be must watch television.

AMC's new series gets off to a slow start, and needs to do much, much more to engage an audience.

Quality drama about oil industry family kind of a snooze.

That's Pierce Brosnan behind the whiskers in this epic oater about a wealthy Texas cattle baron.

If you're looking for yet another show centered around a morally grey white man with a dark past, The Son might be right up your alley.

Audience Reviews for The Son: Season 1

If the audience member has read historical non-fiction about the Comanches and Apaches taking young captives then the whole series, based on the main character, Eli, would make sense and the evolution of Eli would make sense, and is astoundingly reflective of those days past. I love this epic series.

Muito bom, de muito bom gosto.

I love Brosnan! Brings great depth of character. Another reason to utterly ignore critics and look at the audience rating! Far more accurate!

Just finished the 1st Season and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Great storytelling.

Had potential but the story got progressively inconsistent and farcical

Great to have a good old western drama and enjoyed all the plot twists. Can't wait for Season 2.

THIS MOVIE WAS an adaptation of the Phillip Meyer novel. It was good, but didn't follow the book all the time. In this one, RT critics rated it 50%, but the audience gave it 84%.

I OFTEN ENJOY SHOWS/MOVIES THAT THE CRITICS DO NOT AND THIS IS ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF SUCH. I AM ONLY ON THE FOURTH EPISODE BUT SO FAR I AM ENJOYING THIS SHOW. THE ONE THING THAT DOES BOTHER ME IS THE INCONSISTENCIES WITH AGE. IN 1849 ELI MCCULLOUGH WAS PROBABLY AROUND 14 YEARS OLD AND THEN IN 1915 HE WOULD BE ALMOST 80 AND IS PLAYED BY PIERCE BROSNAN. Brosnan is no spring chicken but he is too young for the part. At least make it somewhat feasible. I am looking forward to seeing how this all develops.

Strong story line, superior acting, interesting time in history.

It may be 'sluggish' at times, but that engages the drama of the story. Too much drama and dialogue can kill a story faster than silence. Patience and take in the story.
