Critics Consensus

Though at times stodgy, The Spy's exploration of a real-life hero remains engaging thanks to a moving performance from Sacha Baron Cohen.

This dark edge is not quite present in Baron Cohen's performance.

Sep 6, 2019 | Full Review…

The only way a show like this will work is with a magnetic presence at its center, and Cohen is engaging at best.

Sep 6, 2019 | Rating: B- | Full Review…

The Spy is another high-wire act from the nonpareil screen presence, albeit a shakier one that often lives and dies on the actor's very particular set of skills.

Sep 5, 2019 | Rating: 3/4 | Full Review…

Baron Cohen couldn't have found a role more well-suited to his gifts and career to date. The Spy is a thriller played entirely straight, but it also feels like Baron Cohen's persona with vastly higher stakes.

Sep 4, 2019 | Rating: 3.5/5 | Full Review…

Though the series struggles at times to fill its already modest six hours with what might be called a thrilling narrative, The Spy nevertheless manages to deliver a taut and compelling psychological drama.

Nov 26, 2019 | Full Review…

In technical and stylistic terms, [Gideon] Raff has got a few creative surprises up his sleeve, like any words written, typed, or read by Eli arranging themselves on a blank surface nearby, before gently disappearing.

Nov 26, 2019 | Rating: B+ | Full Review…

The Spy is entertaining, if unmemorable. The plot isn't particularly twisty and the characters are two-dimensional. It doesn't actually engage with the historical politics in any meaningful way.

Nov 26, 2019 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

All of the parts work well together - from the cast to the script to the direction and beyond - to make for a compelling watch.

Nov 26, 2019 | Rating: B+ | Full Review…

The Spy isn't groundbreaking by any means, but it does offer a solid story with a riveting performance by Sacha Baron Cohen in the lead

Oct 13, 2019 | Full Review…

Espionage drama mostly a sleeper agent, has sex, violence.

Oct 2, 2019 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

The Spy is definitely not as flashy as a James Bond or Jason Bourne thriller but makes up for action with truly nail-biting moments.Too deliberately paced for the big screen but feels more like a feature film than a television series.

Sep 5, 2019 | Rating: 9/10 | Full Review…

Mostly plods through its familiar espionage narrative, a dull illustration of complex history.

Audience Reviews for The Spy: Limited Series

Very good series that don't just portray the spy as a James Bond but more realistic. The story itself is fascinating. Only problem is the dialogs in the last episode are superficial
  • Jan 27, 2021
Cheesy acting, created through the eyes of a Gay Israeli atheist who does not have a clue on how the Arab world works. Is like asking a Martian to make a movie about Earth.

Nitel cam clasic dar Cohen joaca
  • Dec 28, 2020
Absolutely remarkable, history in the making - Cohen educates generations both literally and professionally what it takes to sacrify oneself as a world-class actor. No more booyakas and Jaksiemasz, please!
  • Nov 29, 2020
Really fantastic. Not sure how accurate it is but it surely feels authentic. I was wrapped up in every episode. If you like real life spy stories, you'll love it.

I've been intrigued by the story of Eli Cohen my whole life and was thrilled that it was finally made into a mini-series. Sacha Baron Cohen is a superb dramatic actor and I loved him in this! The only thing I would have changed is the language. It would have felt more authentic if it had been in Arabic and Hebrew like "Fauda" instead of heavily accented English.

Wow. Fascinating spycraft, suspenseful tension, complex characters, and interesting history and strategic ideas. It's told from the Israeli point of view, so I don't know how objectively accurate it is or how fair it is to the Syrians; however, it is for sure one of the most compelling shows I've watched in a long time.

The fact that each and every actor speaks English, albeit with the appropriate foreign accent, doesn't add to a sense of authenticity. Also, for example, below the sign in Hebrew outside the doctor's office where the wife has just had her pregnancy confirmed, is the acronym OBGYN; America is only country in the world that uses that designation for gynaecologist, ginekolog, ginakolog etc. The obvious bias towards insular American audiences is bothersome but I might well be alone in my irritation.

The catchy plot is ruined by the completely nonsensical action of a main character. The job of a spy is to get unnoticed, and to collect information in a planned way to mininimize risks.. The character keeps acting like James Bond which doesn't fit the realistic character of the movie. À real pity. Most likely, real life spies are way too boring. Actually they are more often than not second rank office clerks with access to information and a dull life. Not likely the material one wants for a movie. Don't watch this if you have any notion of espionnage or history. That will just feel too dumb
