Critics Consensus

Though at times stodgy, The Spy's exploration of a real-life hero remains engaging thanks to a moving performance from Sacha Baron Cohen.

[T]his is a startlingly bold demonstration of Cohen's acting chops. It's quite the Cohenaissance. Go to Full Review

The Spy never quite manages to rise to the level of its excellent lead actors, but ends up being a satisfying depiction of one of the more unusual success stories of international espionage. Go to Full Review

The fact that The Spy leaves the viewer as awestruck by the story as by [Sacha Baron] Cohen's convincing and emotionally-layered portrayal makes it a stone-solid drama... Go to Full Review

Though the series struggles at times to fill its already modest six hours with what might be called a thrilling narrative, The Spy nevertheless manages to deliver a taut and compelling psychological drama. Go to Full Review

In technical and stylistic terms, [Gideon] Raff has got a few creative surprises up his sleeve, like any words written, typed, or read by Eli arranging themselves on a blank surface nearby, before gently disappearing. Go to Full Review

The Spy is entertaining, if unmemorable. The plot isn't particularly twisty and the characters are two-dimensional. It doesn't actually engage with the historical politics in any meaningful way. Go to Full Review

Abha R @Abharaina Jan 8 Eli’s character comes across as the most careless spy imaginable. Even without the opening scene where he is caught, it is clear from his actions. The writing makes you laugh at his eagerness and needless risk-taking rather than see him as a skilled spy. Learning it was based on a true story only heightened my disappointment, because the real person deserved a much stronger and more serious portrayal. Critic reviews do it absolutely no justice. 10/10 See more edgar p Sep 15 Cohen shines here! delivering a powerful performance that proves his talent goes far beyond comedy. The plot twists and cinematography will not waste you're time, enjoy! See more D K Jun 29 Put of watching this for a while, not a fan of Baron Cohen. I did not expect Cohen to do well in such a serious dramatic role, however, I will admit I was pleasantly surprised at Cohens performance. On point for the material with only a few times where it seemed a wee bit forced. Excellent story, great pace and the cinematography is well done. Worth the watch, even if you don't like Cohen.
