Critics Consensus

Though at times stodgy, The Spy's exploration of a real-life hero remains engaging thanks to a moving performance from Sacha Baron Cohen.

This dark edge is not quite present in Baron Cohen's performance.

Baron Cohen couldn't have found a role more well-suited to his gifts and career to date. The Spy is a thriller played entirely straight, but it also feels like Baron Cohen's persona with vastly higher stakes.

The Spy is another high-wire act from the nonpareil screen presence, albeit a shakier one that often lives and dies on the actor's very particular set of skills.

The only way a show like this will work is with a magnetic presence at its center, and Cohen is engaging at best.

In technical and stylistic terms, [Gideon] Raff has got a few creative surprises up his sleeve, like any words written, typed, or read by Eli arranging themselves on a blank surface nearby, before gently disappearing.

The Spy is entertaining, if unmemorable. The plot isn't particularly twisty and the characters are two-dimensional. It doesn't actually engage with the historical politics in any meaningful way.

Though the series struggles at times to fill its already modest six hours with what might be called a thrilling narrative, The Spy nevertheless manages to deliver a taut and compelling psychological drama.

The Spy isn't groundbreaking by any means, but it does offer a solid story with a riveting performance by Sacha Baron Cohen in the lead

Espionage drama mostly a sleeper agent, has sex, violence.

Oct 2, 2019 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

The Spy is definitely not as flashy as a James Bond or Jason Bourne thriller but makes up for action with truly nail-biting moments.Too deliberately paced for the big screen but feels more like a feature film than a television series.

Mostly plods through its familiar espionage narrative, a dull illustration of complex history.

All of the parts work well together - from the cast to the script to the direction and beyond - to make for a compelling watch.

Melodrama with terrible acting. The story is pure propagandistic pap. I regret wasting time on it.

Top notch! Sacha Baron is just excellent!

This show will keep you on the edge of your seat, especially the finale. Sacha Baron Cohen's performance was incredibly good, and the supporting cast was well chosen. Because it's based on a true story, you get easily attached to the characters and feel their pain. If you're a fan of Homeland, this show won't disappoint.

Sacha Baron Cohen provides a fantastic performance making The Spy a fascinating and gripping drama, and shows that his range extends well beyond his famous comic roles. "Respect", as Ali G might say. The series is beautifully and stylistically shot (although the faded heat of Israel might be a little too much) with an interesting take on 1960s Middle East and spycraft. Altogether, a superb series which most people would enjoy.

This series had the potential to be quite fascinating, but too many times logic was missing from the behavior of the characters. It felt like a twist happened out of the blue even when looking backwards, did not make sense. The last episode was actually the most compelling.. Certainly not nearly as good as Homeland which was done by the same people.

A phenomenal, thrilling, and sometimes difficult to watch series. If this were a fictional Hollywood production, I would say that the writing was great. Given the fact that this was based on a true story, it makes every single scene so much more powerful. Sacha Cohen, playing Eli Cohen, with a mind-blowing performance, carried the show in a way I could have never expected or predicted. All the supporting cast did a great job, but my hat goes off to Borat. The recreation of both Israel and Syria in the 1960s, and the color contrasts between different scenes made the show beautiful as well. Most of Kamel's rich scenes in Syria had vibrant colours and fun parties, making you forget that it was all an act. The last episode was entirely black & wide, foreshadowing the already obvious outcome that Eli's time has come to an end. Everything about the way the film was shot was amazing. As a short 6 episode limited series, there is no reason not to watch this!

I loved it!! and was very surprised with his acting skills he was amazing.

Riveting. Excellent acting and script. Adam Sandler's disappointing Uncut Gems pales by comparison. Based upon a true story.

The acting performances are really good. At times you break out in sweat by proxy for the main character.

    Amazing performance of Sacha Baron.
