Critics Consensus

Wading in the success of Season One, The Summer I Turned Pretty packs less heat and romantasy intrigue this second time around, but it remains a guilty pleasure nonetheless.

The Summer I Turned Pretty drags people in with the promise of a desperate love triangle, but eventually delivers a bittersweet reflection on maturity and desire. Go to Full Review

Adults will find much to enjoy here, but it’s a refreshingly teen-aimed show that wants young women to find themselves amid its mixture of nostalgic fantasy and real-life angst. Go to Full Review

The second season of The Summer I Turned Pretty... is so good that it makes the first season feel like a preamble we had to watch to get to what the show was meant to be. Go to Full Review

The adaptation of It's Not Summer Without You doubles down on Han's boring love triangle, while skirting over the grieving for Susannah. Padded episodes and a confounding new antagonist played by Kyra Sedgwick make this season a slog. Go to Full Review

A hopeful, romantic series — even if it’s complicated — that understands its audience digs into the deeper, universal themes properly. Go to Full Review

Season two of The Summer I Turned Pretty is just as contrived and cliched as the first, although the backward fixation on looks and beauty is thankfully dropped this time around. Go to Full Review

ALL- C @RT35432431 May 28 This season is the weakest of the 3 without a doubt. Whilst the first 3 episodes are really quite fantastic and packed with action, once the novelty of the plot surrounding the sale of the house wears off you begin to realise just how many filler episodes there are. Telling the story through flashbacks is interesting and often works quite well but those very flashbacks underline how much distraction from the main plot is required to fill runtime. I don't necessarily have issues with the main plot - I actually think the concept is quite good - but, quite simply, there isn't enough meat on the bone for a whole season. Furthermore, certain characters like Skye are introduced and simply don't add anything Skye is the worst caricature of a non-binary person and, if anything, it's quite an insulting representation of non-binary people. This season simply doesn't have the feel good factor of the first season and ultimately that is main attraction to a show like this in the first place. See more Laurian D @Laurian Dec 9 I'm baffled ar how many reviewers here complain about the show being messy and confusing. This is actually its greatest achievement! This is how being a teenager in love feels like, the quest for finding out who you really are and what you actually want, need and first of all FEEL is usually a messy and emotionally confusing road that is masterfully depicted here. Belly breaks the fourth wall and exposes her inner turmoil while desperately trying to hide it from the other characters. Frustrating? For sure. Relatable? Absolutely! See more Selina R @RT53041713 Oct 10 Okay, this season was MESSY!! Like wtheck was even going on with Belly? I did not expect a lot of these twists and turns to happen in the show — (and I don't mean that in a good way). This show is straight up toxic! I was hooked on this show originally for the whole love triangle thing but this whole back n forth bs between Belly and the brothers had me as lost and confused as Belly was in this season. She's in love with one brother then easily gets distracted by the other one and the whole back n forth thing, Belly trying to fight her feelings the entire season just ended up being so exhausting to watch in the end. I feel like I might've dodged a bullet by not reading the books lol! See more Read all reviews
