For some people, the favorite memories from their childhoods are playing with toys, some of which become iconic through the years as multiple generations of people play with the venerable playthings. This series takes a look at some of America's greatest toy franchises, including the people and companies that created them, telling the stories of the rise -- and, sometimes, fall -- of the billion-dollar creations. Some of the featured toys are original creations, such as Barbie, while others are based on pop-culture franchises, including the "Star Wars" line.

This series is no mere exercise in nostalgia for kids of the '70s, '80s and '90s. It's a surprisingly intriguing, good-humoured and even gimlet-eyed dive into the very human stories behind some of the Western world's biggest toy phenomena. Go to Full Review

The tone can sometimes be a little irreverent, but this is a labour of love, and those interviewed are clearly having the time of their life. Go to Full Review

The Toy That Made Us continues a winning documentary formula, but doesn't do much to reinvent itself. Go to Full Review

I'm glad to say that the series hasn't run out of popular toy brands. We get a good haul here: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, My Little Pony, Mighty Morphing Power Rangers, and WWE (formerly WWF). Once again you get a lot of interesting stuff about the toys you probably never knew about. There are a lot more toys based on existing properties here. It might bug some that the TMNT and PR episodes focus a lot on the shows and films as well as the toys, but it is kind of necessary seeing how the relationships between products and media are so hand-in-hand. You'd be surprised how much the toys have really influenced the TMNT as we know them. WWE fans be forewarned that the organization has apparently declined to participate, so no interviews with Vince McMahon or anyone else. Overall, I highly recommend this.
