News & Interviews for The Upshaws: Season 1
The jokes are entrenched in racial stereotyping and clichés. The Upshaws was meant to be transgressive, one imagines. It's harder to imagine who'll be laughing.
Having such a particular blended family immediately gives The Upshaws a specificity that really works for it, especially when the scripts lean all the way in by letting the characters react to it all individually, too.
Save for one noteworthy update to the Black family sitcoms of yore, Sykes and her co-creator Regina Y. Hicks' largely listless series would've fit right into the network TV comedy landscape 20 years ago.
Both Sykes and Hicks have more than two decades of TV on their résumés, and The Upshaws benefits from their sitcom expertise... But it's TV treasure Fields who holds The Upshaws together.
The Upshaws, is, of course, not a stand-in for the entirety of the Black American experience, but, by incorporating the complexities of a blended family amid varied parental and marital relationships, it feels not only timely, but also incredibly genuine.
The Upshaws is a humorous and contemporary portrayal of an imperfect but loving family.

Jun 02, 2021A sitcom with an adult spin. Kim Fields and Mike Epps are a married couple in a modern family trying to navigate the nuances of modern living through a series of laughable incidents. Wanda Sykes is hilarious every time she is on the screen. Nothing incredible but likable characters. As the season progressed they did a good job of handling more serious issues with levity and style.
May 29, 2021Great Funny Cast, Old Sitcom feel, Great Storylines, and Very Realistic, Only bad thing is some episodes are over dramatic...
May 26, 2021I so Love This Show This how Family should be betray Being there self not what a Perfect Family Look like no Family Is Perfect for sure be real and truthful that is what is a good show real life issues and blended Family with kids in and outside the marriage and how they deal with it and how making mistakes dealing with it and learning from it also to do better 😀👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼So Loving This Show ❤️ Netflix thanks for this it makes me laugh and think wow that's Friends I know or some Family Members going through this blending kids or step kids or etc #TheUpshaws
May 25, 2021Terribly unfunny, awful acting.
May 24, 2021A hit and miss show. It isn't really sure what it wants to be, if it wants to be a comedy or dramatic but can't find the balance to be both. Wanda Sykes in a supporting role steals the show and is the only solid consistent performer.
May 23, 2021First sitcom to make me laugh in decades, I completely the whole series on my own that's how good it was for me. Epps and Sykes chemistry is electric
May 21, 2021It's funny, it's tragic and it's complicated. It's like real life. It is not a typical we are all friends and cozy family sitcom. There are problems, both personal and financial. It is one of these sit-coms that do not whisk you away in a sugar-coated all is well ferry-land. But it rather shows the daily struggle, joys and hardships of normal people living normal lifes. No super-genius wise-crack kids. No unaffordable New York Apartments… It shows how life can be or is for most of us. No clear-cut or black and white situations. But a lot of normal, everyday life, grayish messiness that we all go through. That makes it refreshing, interesting and rather unique in the TV landscape. MUST SEE
May 21, 2021Terrible acting, cringe laugh track
