The Venture Bros.: Season 1 (2004)

SEASON:

TOMATOMETER

Critic Consensus: The Venture Bros. is both affectionate towards the science fiction hallmarks that it parodies and disdainful of its own characters, making for a pastiche that is easier to admire than love -- but viewers who enjoy dense riffs on the genre should find much to relish here.

Critic Reviews for The Venture Bros. Season 1

The writing really works on multiple levels. There are a ton of pop-culture references if you're looking, but... the show doesn't rely on them for the humor.

The jokes are fast and furious, the tone is very mature, and the animation recalls a bygone era when people actually cared about the look of cartoons.

Sep 7, 2018 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

The episodes veer from brilliant to funny to stupid, but Jackson Publick and Doc Hammar -- the driving forces behind the series -- never play it safe.

Sep 7, 2018 | Full Review…

For some, the parody aspect of the show will be enough... For others it will be a deeper appreciation of the characters and the tight and unfortunate world of disappointment in which they find themselves trapped.

The cynicism of The Venture Bros. feels forced and unnatural

Sep 7, 2018 | Full Review…

By the finale, the show has so elegantly set up real physical and emotional stakes... It almost plays like Hammer and Publick intend it as a sick joke, but there's something real, raw, and horrible underneath it.

Sep 7, 2018 | Full Review…

The first season can be a trial. If the references fail to grab you at all, then this probably isn't going to be a show worth investing in, even if it does get substantially better.

The performances have yet to grow into the slightly manic energy that every character touches on in later seasons... The jokes here seem more stilted in general.

Sep 7, 2018 | Full Review…

It doesn't help that the humor is more cliched, and more broad, at this early stage.

Sep 7, 2018 | Full Review…

Beginning as a relatively straightforward Johnny Quest parody, over the course of its first two seasons The Venture Bros. developed a mythology as deep and rewarding as that of the comic books and sci-fi series that it was spoofing.
