Critic Consensus: Six seasons in, The Walking Dead is still finding ways to top itself, despite slow patches that do little to advance the plot.

Critic Reviews for The Walking Dead Season 6

All Critics (23) | Top Critics (9)

There's few things on TV that possess that real sense of danger, but The Walking Dead has proven time and time again that it is happy to sacrifice its sacred cows. The only question with season six is who will be first on the chopping block.

Good or bad, digestible or not, The Walking Dead simply exists in its own atmosphere. Maybe that's reason enough to hold it to a higher standard. If nothing can stop you, then shouldn't everything be on the table?

What this spells out for the rest of the season - which of our heroes will survive, whether they'll stay in Alexandria for the long haul - isn't necessarily clear, but it's a great kick-off to Season 6.

Sunday's episode is exceptional, marred only in a few spots by padding that's inevitable with these supersized episodes.

You have a season that meanders around, but is rarely boring, which we haven't always been able to say for The Walking Dead. But we can now.

While season six may be a step up from the previous season in several regards, including story, characters, and entertainment value, there are still a number of problems in all of these areas and more that continue to hold it back from its full potential.

Call it escalation, maybe in response to the tepid spinoff Fear the Walking Dead, but Walking Dead in its sixth season premiere wants you to remember the nightmare started here, and this show owns it.

It's taken us six seasons to get to a point where we know this much about the characters. A better show would have gotten us there sooner. Maybe "The Walking Dead" has finally turned the corner.

The Walking Dead looks very much at the top of its game, with strong character material mixed with a massive set piece in the extended premiere.

The Walking Dead, more than any other show, takes responsibility for its carnage. The characters who remain carry the burden of those who do not.

Audience Reviews for The Walking Dead: Season 6

Though something should be said for the anti-climatic ending to this season, The Walking Dead still holds itself high as the best on television. The tv show still keeps the blood, gore, and aggressive fight sequence to an extremely high point. The drama is still ever-engrossing and, if I may go back to the fight sequences, they are absolutely epic.

This where it all started when this season started to be boring, this probally okay season, but the cliff hangers so many that itâ??s just pure stupid.

Season 6 still manages to keep a fresh, dark, and ultimately enticing concept alive. Series 6 of The Walking Dead sees Rick lead the community of Alexandria as they face increasing challenges from large herds of walkers to attacks by scavengers known as the Wolves. Rick and what's left of his group must ally with the Hilltop colony to survive, whilst dealing with the Saviors and their ruthless leader Negan. Honestly, I've watched "The Walking Dead' up until season 8 and it's managed to stay pretty strong. I know that's not the most popular consensus, but there's a reason this show is still one of the highest grossing on television networks. Yes it's entertaining but it's also really strong and has some really awesome things going for it. One thing I really liked about season 6 was its introduction to this new, more permanent home for the characters. We're introduced to a plethora of people who will ultimately put our beloved favorites in intense situations, and change their lives for good. I love seeing how different this place is compared to the last ones we've seen, and the people we're introduced to bring a whole lot of different to the table. Let's talk characters. The season spends a lot of time building up this Negan. With that infamous villain being built, we also see a lot of different relationships unfold between new characters. Glenn's relationship with Nicholas, Rosita's with Abraham, Rick's with Morgan, and so many more. I love seeing these characters, new and old, also come together in dire situations - showing us they're still all human. In fact, I think one of the best moments of the ENTIRE series was in Ep. 9. I still think the story, especially in this season, was extremely entertaining, high-octane, emotional, and smart. I honestly think the writing was great. Yeah, over the course of a long season there's always some moments of iffiness, but I honestly think this series has some of the cleanest, most cohesive writing I've seen in television. The stories are always interesting (yes there are some filler episodes that I don't care for as much, but they all add up) and they're always well written. I genuinely believe that dialogue is one of the strongest suits of this franchise. I also really appreciate the consistency. Whether that's consistency with makeup, production design, character consistency, or whatever, everything always feels cohesive. I always feel like the characters and their arks are consistent and don't stray from who they are. We learn more about them in the best of ways. The production design is always, always phenomenal. I genuinely think this series is so successful because of the consistency it brings to the table. In the end, I actually really enjoyed season 6. It actually may be one of my more favorite seasons, and is certainly an emotionally charged one at that.

Although the introduction of The Saviors adds some new tension, and makes Season 6 more interesting, the season as a whole is much slower and dull than the ones that came before it.

great first 4 episodes episodes 5,6,7,8 were not it then was made up with the episode no way out and the other six episodes after it, then we get to the season 6 final with the shit ending which led us to the first episode of season seven.

There are flaws in this season for sure... but they are definitely outweighed by all the insane and intense moments, and increased character depth. A pretty great season

For me i did have mixed feelings for TWD season 6. There was a lot of character development and thrills. But the Glen fake out and the cliffhanger did damage the season a bit but there still was some good episodes and character development which is why is still watch and like the show.

Another very good season that when its good, its good but when its bad its just boring. There are easily 4-5 episodes you could skip if you binge watched the show. I did enjoy the season but the fake out deaths you have to wait 3 episodes to find out about are a cheap trick that has worn out its welcome one too many times. The writers are running short on ideas and the show should focus on quality not quantity. Just too many episodes...again, too much filler. all of that is before the cliffhanger...it really ruined the whole season. A cheap trick that worked but it was so cheesy and poor in its execution. The show needs a drastic upturn in writing. Overall i liked the season but I hated the cliffhanger and again i get bored watching mediocre episodes to get to the action episodes.

Despite having one or two good episodes and one of the most clever cliffhangers in TV history, the sixth season of The Walking Dead continues to prove to me that the show should just end already.

This season feels dry to me this season doesn't add nothing new sure it gave us Nagan but the wait was to long for me this season didn't give us much with maggie having a baby that the only thing it gave us the fights are not that great has they were in the past seasons and negan how he came in was just stupid sure hes funny and sure how they brought him to comics they did the same thing on the but on the comics its better its the same of the show but for some reason it just doesn't feel right to me and leaving us a cliffhanger is just stupid we had to wait for season 7 and i wish i didn't wait for that awful season this season is in the middle 6/10
