What to Know

Critics Consensus

This suburban nightmare sometimes achieves the campy fright of creator Ryan Murphy's best horror fare, but it sprawls in too many ludicrous directions to satisfy.

Series creators Ian Brennan and Ryan Murphy, inspired by a true story, turn the stacked cast into delicious characters served with a sly relish. Great binge fodder. Go to Full Review

If it’s good acting you’ve come for, you can expect it from this cast. Only where is the rest of it? It’s so stylised and lifeless it passes over one’s frontal lobe like lukewarm tapioca. Go to Full Review

Instead of tapping into legitimate fears about safety and surveillance, the show overplays its hand, revelling in conspiracies about a local satanic cult and other grisly atrocities. Go to Full Review

An underwhelming tribute to the American suburban thriller. Go to Full Review

You can’t criticize Murphy’s work ethic. But you might wish he’d take a little time off and sit a little longer with his writers before they dash on to the next overly long and under-thought project. Go to Full Review

A E @RT23562371 Jul 11 The watcher is rather compelling at first but holes are quickly poked in the story the show presents as it often happens in Netflix productions they start great then get dumber and dumber. You are introduced to a rather nice family with some hinted at minor intrigue but nothing major. By the 6th episode characters have flip-flopped a few times and major events in their lives are unaddressed or are "addressed" in a way no real person or family will react. Also, instead of utilizing both children in the show and story to fullest they focus a lot more on the daughter with a very expected and tiresome story line that is also kind of swept under the rug. the son doesn't seem exist for the most part. The conclusion of the series is not satisfying in the least the last episode like much of the second part of the first season focuses on the uninteresting and the sequence of events at the end is just lazy and destroys any mystery or suspense that was left. Watch with tempered expectations See more Joseph Tutorials T @OSCGJoseph Mar 27 how can i show like this be so lame See more Mark W. @MinneMark612 Mar 16 Fun and campy with a couple ridiculous plot twists but good performances and worth a watch. See more Lisa J @LisaX Feb 9 The acting is decent. That is all I can say about this show. The whole story line has a sole purpose of giving you vague clue about who is the watcher and what is their agenda. But at the end, everyone has a "motive" and the case remain unsolved. Everyone act weird for unknown reasons. Misleading the audience to watch the entire thing. only telling a half-as story like this is a crime. It feels like a scam and Total waste of time. See more VITALII H @freakynickison Oct 28 I am impressed. Based on the true story and it's still a ongoing criminal case. When I read it at the end of the season I must admit I literally lost my sh*t. One thing about Ryan Murphy, when you see his name attached to some project - u gotta check in. I didn't know that he was a writer for this show until I started to watch it. Why I did? Because there is Jennifer Coolidge and yuh, she's an Icon, duh... The show was very cohesive, well put together and keeps you intrigued. Not 10 because it wasn't groundbreaking but I really enjoyed it! See more Read all reviews
