The Widower is not sufficiently compelling a story to stand alone, and without a proper sense of motivation or evidence of the surely more subtle manipulations the man engaged in, it is hard to believe in Mr or any of the Mrs Websters.

Webster's crimes are chilling enough, but Shearsmith's disarmingly mild-mannered performance revealed a further level of detestability. This actor doesn't need to crawl around like Papa Lazarou to send shivers down your spine.

It's the third episode where the series really sinks in its claws. The villainy that seemed so one-note in the first part of the mini suddenly becomes intriguingly shaded and complicated.
