Using the real Carson clips is a fun innovation, and keeping it so heart-warming is a nice callback to times when that's what TV shows were, instead of being dark and dreary - even, and maybe especially, for the comedies of today.

It's unclear if There's...Johnny! will continue in any form, but as it stands now, it's an odd, endearing gem, and with only seven half-hour episodes, a pleasant way to kill an afternoon.

Beyond the terrible title that hinders the series, it's impossible to look at this effort and not wish it was a much rougher, unvarnished look at Carson and what it must have been like working on The Tonight Show in the early 1970s

TV is an increasingly strange business, but There's...Johnny! argues that there's still a bit of magic in the chaos.

Some of the more dramatic bits in this first season play a bit clunkily, but the humor is solid - and [Jane] Levy, as Joy, isn't a star in the making. She's a star, ready-made.

More dramedy than laugh out loud comedy, There's Johnny also benefits from some terrific supporting players, including Tony Danza as longtime Tonight Show executive producer Fred de Cordova.
