Critics Consensus

Steven Knight's This Town has a shapelessness that will sag some viewers' investment, but it holds intriguing insights into its specific cultural milieu.

What is great about it is the performances from its young cast – with convincing Brummie accents – are very appealing. Go to Full Review

It’s a lot to handle, and some viewers are going to lose patience while it finds its feet... But your incentives for sticking with it are that it looks incredibly cool and sounds absolutely buzzing. Go to Full Review
Rachel Cooke New Statesman 04/03/2024
On paper, this sounds involving, even exciting: a fat novel of a show. Somehow, though, it doesn’t quite come off. Go to Full Review

For those around at the time, it transports you back to 1981 and the urban unrest and deprivation of the early Thatcher years the song evokes so beautifully. Go to Full Review
Alison Rowat The Herald (Scotland) 04/08/2024
This is bold, assured, storytelling by a writer at the peak of his game, and there has not been as promising a cast of young actors on show since Our Friends in the North. High praise indeed but so far This Town merits it. Go to Full Review

I’d be up for a second series: Knight has created a roster of characters with passion to burn. Go to Full Review

ben p @RT58944439 03/29/2025 Slow writing, some scenes feel rushed. Feels unfinished. Several errors with backgrounds props and vehicles not period correct, number plates in the wrong font, poor quality CGI traffic on scenes filmed on a motorway ‘bridge’ that was most likely on a sound stage. See more Martin D @RT97856540 08/08/2024 A slow-burn start but stick with it and you’ll be well rewarded because it picks up halfway through and does a very good job of carrying you all the way to the excellent ending. The props and soundtrack alone are worth watching it for, and anyone who lived through the late 70s/early 80s as a teen+ will enjoy having lots of memories triggered. Excellent acting, great casting and rich characters. Only downside is that I’ll never be able to look at Lady Mary in Downton Abbey in the same way again! See more Philfy P @RT07988051 04/23/2024 Great series, beautifully acted and incredible attention to detail. Roll on season 2. See more Debbra H @RT63239193 04/16/2024 The style, music and acting are worth watching this alone. It doesn’t quite have the grit that is teased throughout the series. I did really enjoy it and it was surprisingly warm hearted. See more Chris H @RT32911948 04/11/2024 Really enjoyed this. Great characters, handles a big story in 6 episodes well. See more Robert E @RT81420134 04/08/2024 This is original, edgy, explores strange and sometimes difficult places and has a brilliant cast. If you just want some glib entertainment, go elsewhere. You may have to put in a bit a time - a couple of episodes at least - to realise how good and unusual (in the best way) this thing is, but then you will get the point and enjoy. It looks amazing too.
