Immersed in a darkly drawn version of Pittsburgh and loaded with leering images of young women tortured, this show is in need of an emotional connection, some semblance of warmth to rescue it from utter nihilism, but none comes.

Proof positive that sometimes it takes truly talented people to make something deeply mediocre.

The writing here is paper-thin, the kind of scripted crime drama that we've seen too many times for it to feel fresh again.

I was almost instantly uninterested - not just in the crimes at hand, but in the interpersonal relationships of the cop characters themselves.

If it moves away from lingering on shots of torture and sees the virtue in developing its characters, it could grow into something intriguing. If not, then Those Who Kill could be DOA even with the superb Sevigny as its star.

American TV doesn't need to import things that have already become clichs.

This angle was sort of fresh and interesting when Cagney & Lacey did it 1982. Not so much now.

The end of the episode that sheds quite a bit of light on the direction of the series. If it can follow through on what's promised, this may be a gem for A&E.

Although Sevigny brings some of her flair for playing stubbornly outr characters to this role, Those Who Kill fails to distinguish itself from Hannibal, The Following and so much else in TV's corpse-strewn imagination.

The surprise-filled plot of A&E's Those Who Kill will put you on the edge of your seat, and Chlo Sevigny's performance will keep you there.

The Those Who Kill pilot, the only episode A&E made available for review, falters in its murkiness. It suggests but doesn't reveal.

Filled with talented people both behind the scenes and in front of the camera, A&E's new Nordic noir remake Those Who Kill is a needlessly grim slog.

Lacking the nutritious value of originality, we're left with Catherine's mantra about her prey: "You have to be worse than they are." It doesn't get much worse than Those Who Kill.

Judging by the first episode, it may already have started a one-way walk down a dark alley.

What the 10-episode series lacks in originality it makes up for by piling on the creepy suspense.

I am tired of TV shows where anonymous naked women are tortured and killed for set dressing.

Those Who Kill can be a tough watch, because it has some intense scenes. Fortunately, they aren't unduly extended, and for those who stick it out, there look to be rewards.

The mise-en-scne runs deep here. Everything the eye sees, the ear hears, the nerves feel. That amplifies the happenings, making the characters' air heavy, their energy so tightly coiled you await an explosive jolt.
