Chris L @RT53538806 4d A good attempt to distill the spirit of the original novel while staying within the bounds set by TV drama. Like Foundation on Apple TV, a lot had to be reimagined so it didn’t need 10 series just to tell the story. Worth the time to watch it. Great performances by the main cast, but the supporting actors/CGI characters (mostly the "foreign" military and Evans) are wooden, stilted, not sure how to behave even, which detracts from enjoying it whenever they are involved. Almost comical behaviour by the mercenaries and aliens near the end. A lot of concepts and philosophies to get across, which is done well. I think the complaints about pace are probably from attempts to stop it being too dense, give viewers the chance to absorb it all. Those who "get" it quickly want things to move on and complain about the pacing. It took 30 episodes, and I don’t think much of the time was wasted. The start can seem weak as the mystery takes time to build up, but it's beyond worth it. You understand very quickly what it is they're trying to build and then you can't stop binging it. The ending arc had a couple bad episodes but that's about it. This is a piece of high art, driven by God tier performances from the actors (especially Yu Hewei, Zhang Luyi, Chen Jin and Wang Ziwen) A must watch. Stay away from the Netflix version, it's horrid. The western actors are laughably bad. The Red Coast plot is handled excellently, but aside from a couple of other book faithful scenes near the beginning, this is just embarrassing.
