Anchored by the ever-reliable Alfred Molina and a wintry backdrop, Three Pines is a solid addition to the canon of detective mysteries.

Molina’s dedicated police detective has a compelling emotional presence. The show can be grimly serious and somewhat eccentric in the same episodes, but Molina navigates the tonal breadth with ease. Go to Full Review
John Doyle Globe and Mail 12/16/2022
Three Pines is well-meaning and, one supposes, a comforting, traditional mystery series. But the acting is often so wretched you can picture an assistant director on-set, holding a large sign in front of an actor that reads, “Make sad face now.” Go to Full Review

It’s both informative and moving to see several of these lives (which are most often left untold) play out (even if lacking depth) on screen. Go to Full Review

Three Pines feels like a series that was never allowed to hit its stride. Go to Full Review

Three Pines' charms are subtle, starting with the snowy landscape, and including the idiosyncrasies of the small town and its relationship with the nearby Indigenous community. Go to Full Review
Jennifer Bisset CNET 12/19/2022
It introduces Molina's likable Inspector Gamache, but it's an odd murder mystery whose main storyline doesn't always fit comfortably with its other pieces. Still, there's enough intrigue and heart to keep you waiting for the mystery to unravel by the end. Go to Full Review

florencia L @Florencel Jul 31 I enjoyed the pace, the locations, and I enjoyed the non-extra brutal action police officer characterisation, but with humanistic values and morals. At times, a little heavy on the soap, but still enjoyable. See more James M 01/26/2025 Interesting but slow evolving and tedious at times. Worst ending I have ever seen in a series, making me sorry I ever watched it. See more H. D 01/31/2024 Again another tv series including native american "Justice revenge", posing same BS narrative paralelling jewish hardship and persecution such as for native americans in 19th century in such a tortious way just to ingratiate with the possible new big rulers of their own countries (Natives). Big Mess just to regret after october 2023 when they had been hitted to their roots (in the worst inhuman way). This iS a clear example why mean and hostile attacks against certain faiths are not the way to behave. Call It karma or whatever. Could have been a great serie! See more Dave C 12/22/2023 It has all the makings of a good detective series, with great landscapes and settings, and a solid enough lead performance from AM. Unfortunately, it dithers and meanders around intricately measured mysteries and key events to its detriment, feeling sluggish and confused as a result, and never having enough energy to reach the peaks it really should. If there ends up being a second series, I won't be watching See more Tyler S @Tyler298 12/11/2023 How does this have decent ratings? It watches like a Hallmark movie. Not even sure the acting would cut it there See more Paul M 10/03/2023 Since the invention of film there have only been five castings that were rated perfect, absolutely flawless. The casting of Alfred Molina as Chief Inspector Gamache left them all behind. He brings out everything readers loved about the literary version: intelligence, compassion, bravery, along with his all-too human stumblings. I only hope some executive board somewhere decides to bring this series back since we all deserve more time with Molina's Gamache. See more Read all reviews
